Invincible will finally premiere on Amazon Prime Friday March 26 and fans have been eagerly awaiting the animated adaptation. Robert Kirkman co-created the popular comic book series with Cory Walker and it ran for 144 issues from 2003 to 2018. Amazon’s Invincible has a star studded cast including Zazie Beetz as Amber Bennet and Gillian Jacobs as Samantha Eve Wilkins aka Atom Eve. The Illuminerdi participated in a roundtable interview with Zazie Beetz and Gillian Jacobs about working on the highly anticipate series, Invincible. During the roundtable interview Zazie Beetz and Gillian Jacobs were asked if they feel any pressure working on Invincible given the fan base the series already has because of the comics.
Zazie Beetz answered, “No, I didn’t. I think I felt that way because Robert was involved. I thought that the series would be in safe hands and the animation is the same. He was in the booth at every recording session talking to us as much as the director was if not more. He was very involved and that made me feel like this show was really going to honor what is important about the comic and, it’s an honor to be able to bring something to the screen and…I hope people love it. [Beetz then joked] Now I’m nervous!
Gillian Jacobs quickly added, “No, I didn’t think about it like that until you just said it! I think I was just more excited to be a part of this cast and I thought the scripts were so great. And then, as I’ve said in other interviews, like truly the response from friends of being so excited. Friends who were really fans of the comic, so I was kind of buoyed by their excitement. But no, I hadn’t thought about it in that way until you just said that so now I’m wondering.”
Gillian Jacobs and Zazie Beetz are clearly passionate about Invincible and excited for fans to experience it. The trust they have in Kirkman and his vision as well as Jacobs being “buoyed “by her friends excitement are fantastic to hear. During the roundtable interview Zazie Beetz revealed what inspiration she used for her character Amber Bennet in Invincible.

“I think Amber felt very, like somebody I would know and so I kind of just I thought I would just sort of keep her as like ‘motivated teenager in high school’ as possible. Yeah, I think I drew more from myself and my own experience and what dating was like for me and what’s important to me being reflected in what’s important to her.”
With Amber being one of the characters without superpowers it’s no surprise that Zazie Beetz drew inspiration from more of the high school student aspect of the story. Gillian Jacobs voices Eve aka the superhero Atom Eve which means she not only will be in the high school storyline as one of Mark’s classmates, but she also got to experience playing a superhero. Gillian Jacobs talked about the challenges in voicing a superhero for an animated series like Invincible during the roundtable interview.
“Yeah, the challenges for playing a superhero when you’re doing these big fights and you have all this action and you’re just by yourself in a room is to feel like you’re giving it enough, like, volume and resonance. And so that’s sort of the challenge of making your performance as epic as the scene as you’re a part of and it’s a funny thing of having to do it again and again. It’s like ‘No it doesn’t really sound like you’re calling to somebody whose like 10 blocks away while all this is going on, try it again.’ So that’s where I guess trying to project, that, those were my challenges.”
Bringing these beloved characters to life on screen had to be a blast for both actresses. Invincible tackles not only superhero storylines, but teenage and family drama so the series will cover a lot of exciting territories. Jacobs and Beetz are part of an impressive voice cast including J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Zachary Quinto and more.

From The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, and based on the Skybound/Image comic of the same name by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, Invincible is an hour-long, adult animated superhero show that revolves around seventeen-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except that his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

Invincible, Kirkman’s second-longest comic-book series, concluded in February 2018 after a 15-year run.
