What If…? Won’t Add New Characters To The MCU

Marvel's What If...? will not introduce new characters into the MCU.

Marvel Studios’ first-ever animated series, What If…?, won’t introduce new characters to the MCU.

First off, this quote isn’t completely correct as What If…? will introduce The Watcher voiced by Jeffrey Wright to the MCU. But director Bryan Andrews revealed In an interview with the Malaysian site Kakuchopurei, that they weren’t allowed to introduce new characters, which was the only rule they were given by Kevin Feige.

“We basically had operating instructions from Kevin Feige. Basically, we can’t introduce anyone or any character that hasn’t already been introduced in an MCU movie. You won’t be seeing, like, some random person pop up from the comics or other franchises that we hadn’t seen already in MCU proper.”

Considering the series will explore “What If” scenarios in the MCU up till this point, it kinda makes sense that no new characters will show up as the number of scenarios would be overwhelming and won’t really put a new spin on stories we know. It could also create trouble if the characters will then show up in live-action as the audience for this series might be the smallest for a Marvel Studios production ever due to the animated nature and it being released on Disney+.

What If…? Synopsis

Following the creation of the multiverse at the end of Loki’s first season finale, What If…? explores the various branching timelines of that multiverse in which major moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films occur differently.

What If…? will premiere on Disney+ August 11.
