Batgirl, Leslie Grace, talks about imposter syndrome plus getting whelmed to the fact she is Batgirl and how it kept her from thinking about reaching out to her fellow DCEU co-stars.

Being the new kid in a group can be daunting. There is always going to be a comparison to those that came before. Take Leslie Grace for example. Leslie is the newest addition to the DC cinematic heroines club. She will be portraying Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl, in the HBO Max original movie of the same name due out later this year.

As a newcomer, one might seek advice from veterans of the group. However, in an interview with Variety, when asked if she sought advice from other actresses that have previously played superheroines, Grace stated,

“I haven’t. I probably should have. It’s like almost a little overwhelming and hard for your brain to catch up to the magnitude of what it is that you’re doing that it almost feels like it’s happening in a vacuum. I was just like, “Oh, man, I hope I can do this. Am I in the club?” I almost felt like the whole time I had some imposter syndrome. You want to earn your place.
But now that you’re mentioning it, I’m going to slip in a few DMs and ask “Hey, what was your experience?” I did reach out to Sasha Calle, who is Supergirl in “The Flash.” I’m hoping that we get to meet soon because we’re part of the new gen. I did reach out to Xolo Maridueña, our Blue Beetle. He is freaking awesome. I’m so happy for him.”

Would it have been wise to seek out advice from others? On one hand, you would know, somewhat, what you would be getting into. You would be able to get a firsthand account of not only what it is like to play a superheroine but also lead a movie as one. On the other side of the coin, the advice given could also affect your performance negatively. Maybe you try to be too careful in your acting, making you second guess your choices. Perhaps you don’t take a big enough risk. At the end of the day, it’s your movie. The experiences of others during theirs, might not be the same as the experience you would have.

Not much is known about the Batgirl film at this point. She will be sporting a costume reminiscent of the Batgirl of Burnside outfit drawn by Babs Tarr. Also starring in the movie are Brendan Fraser, J. K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, and Ivory Aquino. Fraser will be portraying the film’s villain Firefly and Aquino is cast as Barbara’s best friend Alysia Yeoh while Simmons and Keaton will reprise their roles as Commissioner Gordon and Bruce Wayne, the crimefighter known as Batman, respectively.

Simmons previously played Gordon in Zack Snyder’s Justice League while Keaton previously played Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman. Little is known how these characters from different universes will come together, however, Keaton was originally supposed to first reprise his role in the upcoming The Flash movie which is supposed to utilize elements from the “Flashpoint” storyline which deals with multiverses. That movie has since been delayed so it is still to be seen if Batgirl will be as well.
