Henry Cavill, star of Netflix’s The Witcher, recently sat down for an interview with Variety and revealed that he still wants to return as Superman in the DC Extended Universe. While he and DC appeared to have parted ways in 2018 following the disastrous reception to the Justice League team-up movie. Cavill has never ruled out the possibility that he might reprise the role of the Man of Steel once again. Or, many times over the course of many years, if he gets his wish.
We’ve now known for a couple of weeks that Cavill is in talks to reprise his iconic role as Superman in several upcoming DC movies, though there are currently no plans for him to spearhead his own solo franchise anytime soon. Additionally, the extent of his future appearances is still unknown.
Will Superman be a major supporting character alongside heroes and antiheroes like Shazam or Black Adam? Or merely a cameo in their films? Henry Cavill hasn’t given us enough clues to try and answer that question definitively, but his recent comments suggest that he is ready and willing to return in some capacity.
SUPERMAN CHANGED HENRY CAVILL PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY
Henry Cavill spoke with Patrick Stewart during Variety‘s Actors On Actors issue and addressed the subject directly. In his words:
“I’ve always been a fan of Superman. With a character like that, you carry the mantle with you off set. And it becomes part of your public representation. When you meet children, children don’t necessarily see me as Henry Cavill, but they might see Superman, and there’s a responsibility that comes with that. Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have, and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in years to come.”

Patrick Stewart, himself no stranger to the challenge of taking on iconic and career-defining roles, asked Cavill for clarification, which Cavill happily provided. He then discussed the ways in which playing Superman has changed his line of work.
“It has given me plenty of opportunities for roles, and yeah, it’s been one of those characters which changed the entire course of my career. I’m incredibly grateful for it, and it’s also taught me a lot about myself” – and his worldview in general – “He’s so good, he’s so kind, and when you start to compare yourself to him, because you’re playing him, you start to really look inwards. You say, “Am I a good person? Can I be a good enough person to play Superman?””
It remains to be seen how exactly Henry Cavill would come back as Superman in the DCEU. The responsibility he feels to honor the superhero’s legacy may be huge. However he also has a responsibility to Netflix, where he is set to play Geralt of Rivia in the fantasy epic, The Witcher, for several more seasons of the hit series. So any role he has in future DC properties may be a small one for the near future, unless Cavill finds some very smart way to balance his commitments to both studios.
On the bright side, it’s very apparent that Cavill is showing just as much dedication to this role that he did for Geralt. So any time he spends wearing the red cape again would be time well spent, for him and for moviegoers.
