It’s been a long 32 year wait, but the time has come for royalty to return to U.S. shores in the long-awaited sequel, Coming 2 America.

Superstar Eddie Murphy returns to one of his most famous movie roles as Akeem, in the follow-up to one of the most successful comedies in film history, Coming to America. The new film follows Prince Akeem in his homeland of Zamunda. As the prince prepares to take on the throne, he discovers that he has a heir, an unknown son from his adventures in New York in the first film.

Coming 2 America is directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) who reteams with his Dolemite Is My Name star in the upcoming comedy sequel. In addition to Murphy, the film will also see the return of Arsenio Hall as his loyal sidekick Semmi, Shari Headley as his love Lisa, her father Cleo McDowell played once again by John Amos, Louie Anderson as Maurice, and the legend James Earl Jones returns as King Jaffe Joffer. New additions to the cast include Jermaine Fowler as Lavelle, Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Wesley Snipes plays an antagonist General Izzi, and Tracey Morgan among other notable additions to the cast.

Coming 2 America Trailer

While it will be a nearly impossible feat to duplicate the comedic brilliance of Coming to America, it should give a warm, fuzzy feeling to all fans of the original to see so many of the alter-egos played by both Murphy and Hall return in the sequel. In addition, the characters seem to be commenting on the social changes and political correctness since the 1980’s, in a meta fashion, that promises a wealth of comedic opportunities.

While this is only the first trailer for Coming 2 America, it sets the sequel off on the right foot, for what is surely a monumental task to craft a follow-up to the original. It’s clear that they intended to keep the tone and feel of the first film and it should be a treat to see Akeem and Semmi revisit so many of their iconic places from their adventures in New York.
