The Illuminerdi has gotten the word that Alfre Woodard will be joining the cast of Netflix’s upcoming tentpole The Gray Man, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
Once the Russo Brothers wrapped their work with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the film community pondered where the brothers would take their talents next. They produced Extraction for Netflix, which was met with acclaim during the Spring of 2020. The Russo brothers also have Tom Holland’s Cherry set to hit Apple+ this February, which is garnering considerable award buzz. But The Gray Man proves to be their biggest challenge since capping off The Infinity Saga for Marvel Studios.
Netflix hopes The Gray Man, based off the novel by Mark Greaney, develops into a major franchise and they’ve invested nearly $200 million into it, making it the biggest Netflix film yet!
Alfre Woodard Joining The Gray Man
The Gray Man tells the story of a freelance assassin and former CIA Operative, Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling) who is hunted by a former associate Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), culminating in a globe hopping duel between two exceptionally trained killers, as Gentry tries to save his handler and his handler’s family.
Alfred Woodard is set to play Maurice Cahill, an old friend of Cahill’s who is in poor health. Maurice helps Gosling’s Cahill out while he’s on the run from Evan’s Hansen.
Alfre Woodard is a wonderful actress who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 1984 for Cross Creek. Recently she has done acclaimed work for Netflix and Marvel’s Luke Cage and the film Clemency where she received lots of award buzz last season.

Production is set to start at the end of this month in Los Angeles before moving overseas to Europe. Besides directing duties, Joe Russo wrote the adapted screenplay, with fellow Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely handling re-writes. The film will also star Ana de Armas (No Time to Die), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Jessica Henwick (The Matrix 4), and Kollywood star Dhanush.
I love espionage thrillers, as a massive James Bond fan, so a new franchise in The Gray Man with the directorial talent of the Russo’s starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Alfre Woodard is certainly welcomed and eagerly awaited!
