The final film in the Skywalker Saga would’ve turned out differently had Colin Trevorrow continued on as director. Before it was known as The Rise of Skywalker, Trevorrow’s original title was Duels of the Fates.

In Trevorrow’s original script, Kylo Ren fully embraces the Dark Side of the Force in becoming the First Order’s Supreme Leader. This is further supported by Chewbacca’s actor Joonas Suotamo, as he revealed that in this version of the film, there was a scene that saw Kylo Ren torturing Chewbacca.

A Twitter account known as The Adam Driver Files tweeted some quotes from the actor’s memoir titled, Roar! The Life of a Wookie, that are translated from Finnish. In Suotamo’s book, he shares his experiences as the beloved Wookie since making his debut in The Force Awakens and explains what it was like to work with the late Peter Mayhew before taking over the iconic role.

Suotamo shares a scene and concept art where Kylo Ren was interrogating Chewbacca. In the Rise of Skywalker, there was no interrogation scene of Chewie after he was captured by stormtroopers and taken on a transport. Later on in the film, he was thought to dead after his transport was blown up by Rey’s force lighting, but Finn and Poe managed to find Chewbacca and freed him from captivity.

The scene must have been deemed too dark or brutal for the movie and their actors going forward. Looking back, it probably was the best move for Lucasfilm to remove the scene, as it wouldn’t fit into the film’s narrative and it could have seriously undermined Ben Solo’s redemption arc in The Rise of Skywalker. However it’s a shame that we never got to see Chewbacca and Kylo share a scene interacting with each other, especially since both Chewbacca and Ben are heavily involved in Han Solo’s life. Makes you wonder how Episode IX could’ve change the sequel trilogy had Colin Trevorrow stayed on as director.
