Critical Role has revealed which member of the Mighty Nein will have their origins explored in the next graphic novel and it is none other than the halfling turned goblin rogue, Nott The Brave.
Critical Role first announced their partnership with Dark Horse at 2017 San Diego Comic Con with the first Vox Machina Origins comic book. The adventures of Vox Machina that took place before the Critical Role stream are explored in Vox Machina Origins beginning with how the team came together. Critical Role continues to flesh out their characters with comic books, graphic novels, and even an upcoming novel. But Vox Machina aren’t the only adventurers whose pasts Critters will get to explore.
The Mighty Nein Origins explore the backstory of each member of Critical Role’s Campaign 2 adventuring party before they came together as the Mighty Nein. Each member of the Mighty Nein has a fascinating backstory with quite a bit of mystery still surrounding each of their pasts. With Jester Lavorre, Caleb Widowgast, and Yasha Nydoorin graphic novels already announced, fans have been eagerly awaiting who will be the next member of the Mighty Nein to have their backstory further fleshed out. Critical Role has revealed that the fourth graphic novel in The Mighty Nein Origins series will be exploring the origins of Nott The Brave who had one of the most surprising backstories revealed during Campaign 2 of Critical Role.
A rogue goblin with a drinking problem actually turned out to be a halfling with a family who was cursed to become a goblin. Nott’s arc was one of the most interesting as she found her family and was able to break the curse, with the help of her friends, to once again become the halfling Veth Bernatto. A lot of her past is still a mystery, but that won’t be true for long with Critical Role’s newest The Mighty Nein Origins.

“Veth Brenatto doesn’t have an exciting life, but she likes it that way. Unlike her childhood, it’s safe. Predictable. And her husband and son love her almost as fiercely as she loves them. But Veth’s cozy existence is turned on its head when she and her family are captured by raiders. In order to save them, Veth will commit an atrocity that will sever her from all that she loves—maybe forever—and lead her to become Nott the Brave of the Mighty Nein.”

The Mighty Nein Origins: Nott The Brave is written by Sam Maggs (Captain Marvel, The Unstoppable Wasp) along with Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel who created the character. The Mighty Nein Origins: Nott The Brave will include art by William Kirkby (Rat Queens) and colors by Mildred Louis (Agents of the Realm).
Nott The Brave has an especially interesting backstory, originally a halfling named Veth Bernatto with a husband (Yeza) and son (Luc). Veth and her family were kidnapped by goblins, but Veth distracted their captors in order for her son and husband to escape. During the escape attempt Veth killed the leader of the goblin clan before being recaptured. Veth was drowned as punishment and she awoke as a goblin herself. She was bounced around to odd jobs within the goblin clan, but was eventually forced to be the assistant to the torturer.
Veth took on the name Nott The Brave, no comma, once she was transformed into a goblin. Eventually Nott escaped the goblin clan and was later arrested and thrown in jail where she met Caleb Widowgast. Nott and Caleb worked together to break out of jail and decided to travel together pulling scams and cons before eventually meeting the rest of the Mighty Nein.

Critters are undoubtedly excited to see more of Nott’s past from her time as a halfling, when she became a goblin, and as she became friends with Caleb during their travels. The Mighty Nein Origins is an exciting way to give Critters a chance to learn even more about these beloved characters as they dive into each member of the Mighty Nein’s past.
The Mighty Nein Origins: Nott The Brave is scheduled for release April 5, 2022 and is available for pre-order now. The Mighty Nein Origins: Jester Lavorre is scheduled for release October 26, 2021 and is available for pre-order now. The Mighty Nein Origins: Caleb Widowgast is scheduled for release January 11, 2022 and is available for pre-order now. The Mighty Nein Origins: Yasha Nydoorin is scheduled for release February 22, 2022 and is available for pre-order now.
