Hawkeye finally debuted its long awaited trailer yesterday, and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.
My anticipation has shot up, making it the most exciting MCU project of the year for me, tied with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
RELATED: BREAKING DOWN THE INSANE NEW THE MATRIX: RESURRECTIONS TRAILER
Today, I’m here to break down this epic trailer and if you somehow haven’t seen it yet, watch it before proceeding with this article.
Hawkeye: Step By Step
The trailer opens in beautiful, snowy, New York City where we see that Clint Barton, who according to the synopsis is no longer an Avenger and has retired, has taken his kids on a trip to “make up some lost time”. in this sequence we first see Rogers: The Musical which is undoubtedly a parody of the beloved musical Hamilton and we later see a sequence of the play which makes me think that we’re gonna see more of this in a specific episode.
We then see that someone has become a copycat Ronin and Clint is getting worried that his past as a violent and ruthless vigilante during the 5 years he lost his family is catching up to him. We then see him send his children back to his wife and in this sequence, we see he has gotten a hearing aid in his left ear. This is quite important but we’ll touch on that a bit more later on.
He goes to confront the Ronin copy cat to see it’s just a girl who instantly recognizes him as Hawkeye. This is the first time we meet Kate Bishop, played by the wonderful Haliee Steinfeld. We then she that she is a sharp shooting archer, taking down a church bell.
We then see Clint and Kate become mentor and mentee as we see Clint throwing a Molotov cocktail at who appear to be the Tracksuit Devils, Clint’s rivals from the beloved Matt Fraction and David Aja Hawkeye run, which, as we’ll discuss later, has a very heavy influence on this show.
We then see some great action and humorous sequences that include Clint falling out of a building and a cutaway to him with 10 ice packs on his body, Clint being shot in a restaurant and a failed attempt from Kate to rescue Clint. The cherry on top is that this is all to the tune of the Christmas classic ‘It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ by Andy Williams.
We then get shots of Kate Bishop’s mom, Eleanor Bishop, Lucky the Pizza Dog, Rogers: The Musical, a very fast look at Alaqua Cox’s Echo, Kate and Clint fighting on a ice rink which all culminates to a car chase where Kate shoots an exploding arrow at a van and the trailer ends with Kate and Clint falling ready to shoot more arrows.
So, all in all this was a pretty great trailer and definitely has me excited for the show but we need to dig deeper. Earlier, I mentioned that the series is taking a lot from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 3 year Hawkeye run in the comics and we can easily point out many of these things.
Firstly, the logo is nearly identical to the one from the comic run, The Tracksuit Draculas were the main antagonists of the comic run, many of the shots in the trailer, including the car chase, are homages or recreations of moments from the comic run. Some other notable things included that this was the story where Clint got his hearing aid, we met Eleanor Bishop, who was revealed to be the puppet master behind Madame Masque and of course, Lucky the Pizza Dog.
This trailer leaves out a lot as well: most notably, Florence Pugh, who The Direct reported to be in the show which was later confirmed by Pugh herself and Variety. If you remember at the end of Black Widow, Valentina sent her to kill Clint Barton as she thinks Clint killed Natasha.
Something else that’s been making the rounds is that Vincent D’Onofrio is returning as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. Multiple sources have said he’s returning, and he even acknowledged tweets from yours truly regarding his return. Who’s excited?
