Could Insomniac Games, the acclaimed studio behind Marvel‘s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, be developing their own MCU like Marvel universe? We take a closer look and debate if that’s even possible or needed.

The last PlayStation showcase was a feast for gamers and especially for those who happen to be Marvel fans. After a new story trailer for the soon-to-be-released Guardians of the Galaxy game, Insomniac Games broke the internet with the first trailer for their highly anticipated sequel Spider-Man 2, and a teaser confirming that they are working on a Wolverine game as well. Could this be the start for their MCU-like Marvel gaming universe?

At this point, it hasn’t been officially confirmed if these two games take place in the same universe. But the question above can be answered relatively fast. If these two games do take place in the same universe, it will likely be shown through Easter eggs or little cameos. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted eastern writings in the Wolverine teaser, that started the speculation that the game could take place in India or even Madripoor, which made its MCU debut in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

We don’t know yet how big the map of the Wolverine game would be if it’s a town or a country a la Far Cry where you can visit jungles, mountains, as well as cities. But it’s safe to assume that Spider-Man 2 will take place in New York City. While the map could potentially be bigger than in its predecessor, at this point there is nothing indicating that Spidey and Wolverine could meet up.

Can Insomniac Games’ Marvel Universe Live Up To The MCU?

It is also worth noting, that even if the games take place in the same universe and Insomniac is trying to build its own Marvel universe it won’t be comparable to the MCU, as it takes the Studio a lot more time to develop a game.

Where Marvel Studios is expected to drop around 8 projects next year (4 theatrical films and 4? Disney+ series +potentially two specials), Insomniac will release Spider-Man 2 in 2023, Wolverine likely even later, so around 2024/2025. And while I, as a huge fan of Insomniac‘s two Spidey games, hope they get access to even more Marvel characters (Daredevil please!), I don’t expect them to develop Marvel games for the next 10+ years. And even if they do, these would likely be around 4 projects (the two we know of and maybe Spider-Man 3 or Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2 and maybe another new character game).

It is sheer impossible to create a Universe comparable to the MCU, which is perfectly fine, as I for one just want good games. And I love their Spider-Man games, I think they are fantastic and I would have been more than happy with only Spider-Man 2, so the Wolverine game is an extra present for all of us fans.
