Stargirl fans, rejoice, for Entertainment Weekly has released several exclusive images of John Wesley Shipp’s Jay Garrick prior to his Stargirl debut in episode 9, which airs on October 5th.
John Wesley Shipp has been associated with The Flash longer than any other actor. First starring as Barry Allen in the short-lived 1990 series The Flash, Shipp would return to the live-action DC Universe in 2014 as Henry Allen, father of Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. In the season 2 finale of The Flash (2014), Shipp took on the additional role of Jay Garrick, The Flash of the Arrowverse Earth 2. In 2018, Shipp reprised his role as the Barry Allen of the 1990 The Flash series in the Arrowverse crossover “Elseworlds”.
STARGIRL: JAY GARRICK FIRST PHOTOS UNVEILED
After the multiverse shattering events of the most recent Arrowverse crossover, Crisis On Infinite Earths, Earth-2 has been rebooted as the universe of the Stargirl TV series. Stargirl heavily features the Justice Society of America, DC’s first superhero team, of which Jay Garrick is a founding member. A full appearance of John Wesley Shipp’s scarlet speedster has been teased since the Stargirl pilot, where his iconic winged cap was seen.
Thanks to these exclusive images from EW, fans now have a more clear idea of what role Jay Garrick will play in Stargirl this October. Episode 9, wherein John Wesley Shipp guest stars, will be a flashback heavy-episode. Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) will reflect on his past with Jay Garrick and the rest of the Justice Society of America, specifically their conflict with the villainous Eclipso. Eclipso is the primary antagonist of Stargirl season two, and is haunting Stargirl, Wildcat, and the rest of the new JSA like he did the original team.
STARGIRL: JOHN WESLEY SHIPP GUEST STARS IN EPISODE 9
Perhaps the most exciting image released is the one featuring Jay Garrick alongside Hourman, Starman, Stripesy and Wildcat. The promise of a classic JSA-centric episode is a tantalizing one, and something fans have dreamt of since the very beginning of Stargirl. Maybe someday we will see other classic members like Alan Scott’s Green Lantern and Doctor Fate alongside Shipp’s Jay Garrick.
As the fight against Eclipso escalates, Courtney Whitmore and company are going to need all the help they can get. Few DC heroes are as legendary, powerful and storied as Jay Garrick, whose personal history with Eclipso could serve as a useful tool for the new JSA. Regardless of how Jay Garrick’s Stargirl story pans out, it is exciting to see a promise made by Geoff Johns in March of 2020.
“[Green Lantern and Flash] are spoken of and they exist in the JSA. There’s a picture of them in the first episode, and there’s plans in the future for things, but Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, to me, are always the elderly statesmen. They’re the big heroes of the JSA and their shadow is very long and they’re great characters. They are a part of the original JSA and their legacies will be felt throughout the show. I don’t want to spoil too much about it, but I can leave it at that.”
-Geoff Johns
STARGIRL: THE FLASH, ECLIPSO & THE JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA
As the legacy of The Justice Society of America continues to be explored in Stargirl, it’s reassuring to know that Jay Garrick’s story will be a focal point.
Stargirl season 2 stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan, Amy Smart as Barbara Whitmore, Yvette Monreal as Yolanda Montez/Wildcat, Anjelika Washington as Beth Chapel/Dr. Mid-Nite, Cameron Gellman as Rick Tyler/Hourman, Trae Romano as Mike Dugan, Hunter Sansone as Cameron Mahkent, Meg DeLacy as Cindy Burman/Shiv, Nick Tarabay as Eclipso, and John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick/The Flash.
