Alicia Silverstone goes up against a giant shark in the new trailer for The Requin. The film, which comes to us from Saban Films, stars Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper as a couple who go on an island vacation where they stay in a bungalow over the water. Unfortunately, a massive storm hits and carries their bungalow into the middle of the ocean where a giant shark awaits. Check out what happens in the trailer below.
The Requin Trailer
I get vibes of The Shallows from The Requin trailer. That 2017 thriller starred Blake Lively as a medical student just offshore from a beach who also had to evade a deadly shark. However, I’m always up for a fun-looking shark movie, especially if it promises gory kills as this trailer does. There’s also the prospect of Alicia Silverstone, who most recently appeared as the voice of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Netflix’s Kevin Smith-produced reboot of the He-Man franchise. She also appeared in a lead supporting role for Netflix’s revival of The Babysitters Club and has upcoming projects Senior Year and Reptile coming up in 2022.

The shark film genre has seen a minor resurgence as of late, with entries such as 2020’s Great White and 2018’s Jason Statham-starring The Meg, and 2019’s creature thriller Crawl being successes. And again, 2017’s The Shallows proved a surprise hit with its suspense and gnarly escape sequences, so it’s clear audiences are still chomping at the bit for good ol’ shark content. With B-movies and creature features having made a noticeable mainstream comeback over the course of the 2010s, it’s no surprise to see something like The Requin arriving so early on in the new decade.
What has me most excited about the trailer is how devoted Silverstone and Tupper appear to be in it. It would be very easy to sink one of these B-movies without a committed lead, but it looks like Silverstone is going all-in on this shark survival scenario. Tupper is best known for his role as Nathan Carlson on the TV series Big Little Lies and has spent the majority of his career bouncing between popular shows like Revenge, A Million Little Things, and more, so it will be nice to see him in a co-leading film role.

Silverstone’s career spans all the way back to the early ‘90s, making her leading film debut in 1993’s cult classic The Crush before appearing in various TV movies and music videos. Her true launching pad was 1995’s Clueless, a modern update of the Jane Austen novel Emma. Other notable roles include Batgirl in 1997’s Batman & Robin, Eve in 1998’s Blast From the Past, and Heather in 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. She also voiced lead character Sharon Spitz in Braceface and appeared as Susan Heffley in 2017’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and has had various other film and TV appearances over the years.
Perhaps The Requin could give Silverstone a new in as an action heroine similar to Karen Gillan in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake. The transition worked for Liam Neeson, so maybe it can work for Silverstone too. We’ll have to wait and see when she fights The Requin.
