Andrew Garfield Reveals How Spider-Man: No Way Home Was Pitched To Him

Andrew Garfield recently spoke about how Marvel Studios and Sony producers made the pitch for him to return for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Andrew Garfield knows the power of a good story.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has arrived, and fans cannot get over it. From front to back, the MCU fandom has spent the past 3 weeks analyzing every small bit of the movie, with no end in sight. From the opening scene, where Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man was outed to the world, to the final bit, with the homemade Spider-Man suit swinging across NYC.

The internet has spewed everything from theorizing that Kraven will be the villain in Spider-Man 4, to speculation that Venom will choose Peter Parker as its new host. It’s going to be a while, though, before we have any official confirmation of what’s happening in the next trilogy.

Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Kevin Feige, and Amy Pascal have all made themselves available for interviews, However, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Watts, and all the villains didn’t. If you’re asking why you haven’t seen interviews or news from any of the previously mentioned cast and crew, that’s why.

However, Andrew Garfield finally gave some interviews a few weeks after the general release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in an effort to increase awareness about the film (not that it needs any), and to promote Tick, Tick….Boom!, which premiered on Netflix in November.

Andrew Garfield Reveals The Pitch That Marvel Producers Made For No Way Home

In a recent interview with Variety, Andrew Garfield spoke about his experience on the Spider-Man: No Way Home set, and how Marvel Studios and Sony producers made the pitch for him to return for another film as Spider-Man. Here’s what Garfield had to say:

I wasn’t expecting to ever have a conversation again about potentially playing Peter Parker. I felt very excited to just to be a fan again. But I got this call from Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige and Jon Watts with this idea. It was immediately undeniable. It sounded incredibly fun, incredibly spiritual — trippy and thematically interesting. On a base level, as a Spider-Man fan, just the idea of seeing three Spider-Men in the same frame was enough.

The pitch was really, really enticing. They said, “You played this character in your way and what would you want to explore if you had an opportunity? If you were dumped into this other universe and faced with this younger you and this older you, how will you respond?

We talked a lot about mentorship. We talked a lot about brotherhood and about what it is to be the older brother, younger brother and the middle brother. There’s also a thing of seeing someone you love walking down a path that you’ve already walked down, and you know it doesn’t lead the place where you ultimately meant to go.

That character is isolated in his emotional experience and physical experience. But what happens when that aloneness gets blasted open, and you come to realize that you’ve never been alone and there are other brothers going through the exact same thing? That’s a big spiritual journey to go on, man. And then we just milked out all the fun that we could possibly have.

Andrew Garfield on how Marvel Studios and Sony pitched him Spider-Man: No Way Home

It really sounds like Marvel Studios spared no expense to get Garfield on board for No Way Home, but it also looks like it wasn’t necessary. If Garfield was ready from the get-go, then everything should have been set in stone for production to commence. Except for, of course, COVID-19. In that time though, it was rumored that Sony took the time for extensive rewrites and changes to the script, to make it perfect. And it was.

It’s also looking like a lot of the themes that were pitched to Andrew Garfield came to reality. The themes of brotherhood and mentorship are all displayed brightly in the movie, and it’s good to see that all actors were on board with that motive. Who knows? Maybe Garfield will return again?
