Simu Liu reveals what he would like to explore and what direction he wants Shang-Chi to go in the sequels.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is unstoppable. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the 29th entry overall. Since then, 3 more projects have been released, bringing the total to 32 projects (5 TV series), and there is a large amount in store for all sorts of Marvel Studios fans in 2022, the highlights being Secret Invasion, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was an enormous success. To say anything else is bogus, as the film has received high critical acclaim, from both the audience and the press. The film was also the second-highest-grossing film of 2021, domestically. It reached an estimated $224 million in the United States, and $207 million internationally, which brings the total to $432 million, the ninth-highest grossing film worldwide of 2021. A sequel has been greenlit, and a spinoff series set to release on Disney+ is in the works, both from Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton.
Simu Liu Reveals Where He Wants Shang-Chi To Go In Sequel
In a new interview with Canadian news outlet Complex Canada, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor Simu Liu spoke about his time developing the character of Shang-Chi, what it was like filming the movie in the pandemic, and what he wants to see from the character going forward. His full quotes can be seen below:
[What] I really loved was hearing about Destin [Daniel Cretton] coming back. He’s such a critical part of the success of that movie…him coming back means that we get to do it all over again, which is fantastic. And then, seeing all the other stuff that he’s locked in with Disney and Marvel makes me incredibly happy as well. He’s a truly special filmmaker.

I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? […] It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I’m curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that’s so powerful but also so dangerous.

And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs? […] I’m just as much in the dark and everyone else, so I don’t know anything, but I’m excited to dive into that process.
Simu Liu on the future of Shang-Chi in the MCU
It’s quite exciting to see that Simu Liu is talking about Shang-Chi 2, as it means that the sequel is being actively developed, and talks are happening, no matter how early in the process they are. With the critical success of the original film, it’s hoped that Marvel Studios can replicate the first movie’s success, and hopefully drive the box office success to even greater heights than what Shang-Chi reached. Fans are also curious to see where Shang-Chi and Katy will go next following the post-credits scene of the film, but we will likely get our answer sooner than the second film, and possibly as soon as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which releases this May.
What did you think of this news? Where do you want Shang-Chi (or Shaun) to go in Shang-Chi 2? Will Simu Liu show up in other projects before his sequel? Let us know by mentioning @The_Illuminerdi on Twitter, and don’t miss Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, now streaming on Disney+. Catch Shang-Chi 2 in theaters in 2024-2025, as it’s set to enter production in 2023.
