Everyone’s favorite Kuya, Jo Koy, is coming to ABC with his own show Josep!

Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr, aka “Jo Koy,” is one of the entertainment industry’s biggest comedians. Jo Koy is a Filipino American comedian known for his stories about his son and mother. The iconic comedian is also known for his appearances on Chelsea Lately, Comedy Central Specials, and multiple Netflix specials.

In 2020 his Netflix special, Jo Koy: In His Elements, featured his journey throughout the Philippines and highlighted its culture. In His Elements includes interviews with other Filipino American comedians and artists. He also has a fourth special on Netflix coming out called Easter Sunday. This special will be based on Koy’s personal life and will debut on Netflix on April 1st, 2022. With his current success, it’s no surprise the comedian has appeared in many successful projects. Now it looks that he will have his own sitcom series on ABC.

Jo Koy Comedy Series Josep Ordered to Pilot by ABC

ABC Studios just announced they ordered a pilot series called Josep. Josep will star Jo Koy himself as the titular character. This project has been in development since May 2021. The pilot series will focus on Josep, a divorced Filipino-American nurse. The series will follow the character and his everyday struggles. These struggles include finding love and being a good father. That includes his meddlesome mother who loves to help people. This show is said to feature events and experiences based on Jo Koy’s personal life and experiences.

Jo Koy is a hugely influential figure to many Filipino Americans. His storytelling and how he integrates his personal life as Filipino American in his acts have entertained and introduced countless people to some Flipino cultural staples. His deeply personal stories make him very relatable, but especially to Filipino-Americans. The plot of the series, being based on Koy’s own life, will likely reflect the experience of Filipino-American.

Hopefully, the Josep Pilot turns into a full series order and then a multiple season order, so there can be another API sitcom that entertains the masses and inspire other Asian Americans. Similar to shows just like Fresh Off The Boat, Pursuit Of Happiness, Andi Mack, The Mindy Project, and Nora From Queens. More positive and well-rounded portrayals of largely stereotyped demographics are always a good thing. Watch this clip below and see what we’re talking about.

Josep‘s pilot episode will be written and executive produced by Steve Joe. Jo Koy will also serve as an executive producer as well as star in the series. The pilot will be produced by Jake Kasdan, Jake Kasdan, Joe Meloche, Michael Golamco, Hieu Ho, and Randall Park.

Are you a Jo Koy fan? Will you watch Josep when it airs? Would Ting Ting be included in the show? Let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to retweet and tag Jo Koy for us on Twitter.
