Texas Chainsaw Massacre finally unleashed its first full-length trailer, bringing Leatherface and Sally Hardesty together again for another epic bloodbath.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) is an upcoming horror-slasher film directed by David Blue Garcia, written by Chris Thomas Devlin, with story by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Fede Alvarez is the most high-profile creative on the team, famous for directing the Evil Dead 2013 film and Don’t Breathe. The marketing recognizes his status in the horror community, plastering “FROM THE MINDS THAT BROUGHT YOU EVIL DEAD AND DON’T BREATHE” in bold, red capitals across the trailer.

This is the first major Hollywood picture for director David Blue Garcia, who previously directed the indie film “Tejano”. He was brought onto the project after the first directors, Ryan and Andy Tohill were fired by Legendary Pictures after production had started. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a direct sequel to the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), ignoring all other films in the franchise.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: OLD MAN LEATHERFACE IS A NIGHTMARE MADE FLESH
This new installment will stream on Netflix, meaning that Texas Chainsaw fans will miss the theatrical experience this time. The last project in the franchise, 2017’s Leatherface was released through DirectTV, and had a very limited theatrical run. I for one, hope that the new movie will also get a limited theatrical release, as other Netflix films like The Irishman have had, but that’s a total longshot.
The trailer simply delivers a level of terror and intensity that feels best suited for the big screen. The sunflower fields we first see Leatherface pop up in are gorgeously shot, and the eerie Texas town is extraordinarily captivating. The franchise has finally returned to it’s violent, Macabre roots, for the first time in nearly a decade. Leatherface was a prequel film that didn’t feature many of the iconic tropes the franchise is known for, such as the cannibal BBQ, or the infamous dinner sequence.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE OFFICIAL TRAILER
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) follows Sarah Yarkin and Elsie Fisher as Melody and Lila, two sisters who end up pulled into the Sawyer family’s world of flesh-eating nightmares. The trailer shows that a group of people is coming into a Texas “ghost town”, hoping to build a new life and reinvigorate the town. What they don’t realize is that Leatherface and the Sawyer family still call that town home.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE BRINGS BACK SALLY HARDESTY
The trailer promises a horrifying bloodbath between these unfortunate millennials and the Sawyer clan. The conflict brings Sally Hardesty back into the fray, and she is prepared for a rematch with Leatherface. Sally Hardesty was originally played by Marilyn Burns in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and I would argue she was the original “Final Girl” in slasher cinema.
Marily Burns passed away several years ago, as did her Massacre costar Gunnar Hansen, the original Leatherface. Sally will be played by Olwen Fouere and Leatherface will be played by Mark Burnham in the upcoming sequel. Their performances continue the stories of these beloved characters in the absence of their iconic original actors, whose work will never be forgotten by horror fans.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre could be the best slasher movie of the year if the trailer is any indication, though it does have some fierce competition in Scream and Halloween Ends.
