Sigourney Weaver is confirmed to return for Avatar: The Way of the Water, the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar. The famed Aliens actress will play a new character, Kiri Sully.
In the first Avatar FILM, Weaver played Dr. Grace Augustine, the head of the Avatar Program and Jake’s mentor. She advocated peaceful relations with the Na’vi, the inhabitants of Pandora. However, Augustine died of a gunshot wound inflicted by Colonel Miles Quaritch during his attack on Hometree. Although she died before her consciousness could be transferred into her avatar form, she became part of Eywa.

The sequel is set a decade after the events of the first film, focusing on the Sully family and the struggles they endure to survive. At the end of the first film, Jake became a permanent member of the Na’vi as his consciousness was transferred into his avatar form, leaving his human one behind. Although Quaritch was killed, he is revived as a Na’vi and reorganizes the RDA (Resources Development Administration)

Although Augustine died in the first film, Weaver returns for the sequel. Unlike Lang and his role of Quaritch, Weaver is confirmed to be the new character Kiri, the adoptive daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri. As the sequel heavily features underwater scenes, Weaver and most of the cast took free-diving lessons to prepare for their roles.

Although underwater filming and motion capture is not new to film productions, combining the two is a feat that has never been done before. Cameron and the crew spent a year and a half developing a new system for accomplishing the new technique. For the cast and crew working on this film and its sequels, the production is a self-imposed challenge to go where no others have gone before.
