Marvel is on fire with their sneak peek presentations and trailers released for D23. We have the retro horror-vibe trailer of Werewolf By Night, we got the reveal of the members of the Thunderbolts, and now they are at it again with an epic trailer for Secret Invasion.

Secret Invasion Trailer

In all intent and purpose, this is a Nick Fury show, with veteran Samuel L. Jackson, who is now officially the longest-running MCU actor, returning as Nick Fury to catch up and tell what he has been doing all this time since we last saw him mysteriously in a Skrull space base back in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Clearly, whatever he has in store, it is all for this moment.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT SECRET INVASION

From as far as we can tell, this is one epic adventure, with multiple supporting characters of spy and military backgrounds from all around the Marvel cinematic universe gathering for this miniseries event. We have Colby Smulder’s Maria Hill clearly upset with Nick Fury for leaving Earth for a long while. While Don Cheadle as James Rhodes from the Iron Man and Avengers movies, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross from Black Panther, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos from Captain Marvel all being mixed up in all of this.

At the same time, we have all-star new players with Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo, Rege-Jean Page, and Kingsley Ben-Adir, all involved in still-unspecified roles as friends or foes in this web of conspiracy. While Oliva Coleman will play a female version of Union Jack, in a sure to be a stand-out performance.

The series’ darker tone sets up a riveting mystery with the question of who is a Skrull at the center of the series. To note the tone, this is one big espionage adventure full of hidden secrets and conspiracies, in the same vein as Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is appropriate since Secret Invasion is based on the comic book of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu, which featured the Skrulls disguised as superheroes, and the tension is all about no one can tell who is friend or foe.

Although, unlike the comics, this miniseries does not seem to have any of the familiar superheroes in sight, making this more of a mission for the people on the ground when all the thunder gods, and giant green monsters are not around to save the day. Even James Rhodes do not have the familiar War Machine armor.

This begs the question about Nick Fury – Is this story all about Nick Fury trying to solve an Avengers-size problem without the help of The Avengers? Nick Fury has always been The Avengers and other super-powered heroes’ biggest supporter, but it has been a long time since he got involved with any of them. Has the passage of time made Nick Furry less inclined to be reliant on superheroes?

Has he seen how big the impact superheroes have on the world, and does he feel responsible somehow? If not, then what is it about this mission, that makes it so that he does not involve any of them? After all, the trailer implies, this is big enough for him to return to earth.

This mini-series will consist of six episodes, and it is set to premiere in early 2023.
