Shang-Chi himself shares his excitement about Destin Daniel Cretton helming the highly anticipated next Avengers film.
That was a wild San Diego Comic-Con presentation. Back in July, Kevin Walked on the stage of one of the biggest comic cons in the world and blew the roof off with announcements like a Thunderbolts film, an 18-episode Daredevil series and Captain America: New World Order. But arguably the biggest announcement was the next two Avengers films that are set to end the MCU’s Multiverse Saga: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Only a few days after these massive announcements, The Hollywood Reporter dropped the news that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has been tapped to helm The Kang Dynasty. Months later, the news broke that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness is set to pen the script for the fifth Avengers film.
Now Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu has reacted to the exciting news about Cretton’s new job.

“It feels incredible. I obviously learned about the news a little bit before the rest of the world did, but I freaked out,” the Marvel actor said. “I sent him like forty texts in a row, all exclamation marks. I’m just so incredibly happy for him, he’s so deserving of that spot. What makes him such a special filmmaker, and I’ve said this from the beginning even when we were premiering our movie, is his ability to make a $150 million movie really, really small, in the best possible way.
I’m really looking forward to what he does on that even grander scale of The Avengers because I think it’s easy to maybe get lost in the spectacle of what those movies can be, the vastness and the grandness of it, but if you can maintain the humanity and the human stories, I think that’s what will make a movie memorable and special, and I think Destin’s got it. I think he’s got it and I think he deserves this so much. I’m so excited to get to work for him again.”
Later Liu was asked if we can expect to see him return in the upcoming film.
“I would think so…I would hope so. Don’t take my word for it.”
It obviously isn’t a huge stretch to assume that one of Marvel biggest newcomers will have a spot in the next Avengers line-up. It’s also very nice to hear how excited Liu is about Cretton’s future at Marvel Studios, just as much as he is for himself. I for one can’t wait to see Simu Liu in the MCU again and couldn’t be more excited to see what Destin Daniel Cretton does with The Kang Dynasty.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings became an instant box office success and cultural phenomenon when it was released in September 2021. It didn’t take long until it was announced that Marvel Studios signed director Destin Daniel Cretton for an exclusive multi-year deal to develop a Shang-Chi sequel and a Ten Rings centric series for Disney+. Cretton is also the executive producer and is expected to direct at least one episode for the Wonder Man Disney+ series.
