It looks like the kids are coming back for the best summer ever. The beloved hit animated series Phineas and Ferb is making a comeback at Disney. Per The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Dan Povenmire announced at the 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour that the show is coming back with 40 new episodes in the works.

PHINEAS AND FERB REVIVAL PART OF DAN POVENMIRE’S NEW OVERALL DEAL AT DISNEY

Povenmire recently signed an overall deal with Disney Branded Television, and the new Phineas and Ferb revival is part of the overall deal. The contract will see two more seasons of the hit animated show on Disney, with 20 episodes apiece. Also, Povenmire will produce a second season of his new show, Hamster & Gretel, which recently debuted on Disney Channel last August.

Povenmire’s new overall deal with Disney will also see him develop new projects as well. During the TCA Press Tour, Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis reportedly commented, “Dan is renowned for his ability to create universally beloved stories and characters with both heart and humor.” David continued, “We couldn’t be happier to continue our collaboration with him and bring back the iconic Phineas and Ferb in a big way.”

Phineas and Ferb was co-created by Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh. The show first debuted on Disney Channel in August 2007. The show lasted multiple seasons and 129 episodes. It also later spawned two animated features, Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension and also 2020’s Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe. The series was one of the highest-rated shows in the kids 6-11 and 9-14 demos in Disney TV Animation History.

As noted by THR, Povenmire also commented, “It has been the greatest pleasure of my career to see how an entire generation of kids and parents have embraced the characters and the humor of Phineas and Ferb. I’m eagerly looking forward to diving back into the show for them and for a whole new generation.”

Povenmire also stars in the show as Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, a mad scientist who wants to take over the Tri-State Area. He’s constantly creating various devices for his schemes, but his plots are usually foiled by his own incompetence or the antics of Agent Perry (Agent P) the Playtpus. Agent Perry is secretly the spy for the Organization Without a Cool Acronym (OWCA), while living as the family pet of the Fletcher Family. Povenmire also voiced Dr. Doofenshmirtz in the animated show, Milo Murphy’s Law; another animated show created by Povenmire and Marsh set in the same universe as Phineas and Ferb.

The main series usually follows the activities of step-siblings Phineas (Vincent Martella) and Ferb (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who want to enjoy their summer vacation to its fullest. That usually involves building various things or having adventures, much to the chagrin of their older sister, Candace Flynn (Ashley Tisdale), who constantly tries and fails to tattle or “bust” her brothers to her mother, Lynda Flynn-Fletcher (Caroline Rhea).

Curiously, the THR report on the TCA announcement did not mention if co-creator Jeff “Swampy” Marsh will be back for the revival. Marsh also voices Major Monogram, who appears in almost every episode as Agent P’s boss. According to another report by Variety, talks are currently underway with Marsh to return for the new episodes. If Marsh is not working on the show, perhaps Disney can at least work out a deal to continue having him voice Major Monogram.

The Phineas and Ferb revival is currently in the works. Disney Channel has not yet announced when the new episodes will debut on the network. Reruns of the show the animated movies are streaming on Disney+. They also air fairly regularly on Disney Channel and Disney XD.
