The Legend of Vox Machina is growing into quite the success story. With a third season and a sister series called Mighty Nein already announced, the world of Exandria is in full blossom.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA S2 E7 – “THE FEY REALM”

Season 2 of the adult animated fantasy series recently premiered episodes 7-9. Episode 7, “The Fey Realm” is directed by Young Heller and written by Kevin Burke and Doc Wyatt. The episode follows Vox Machina in two separate groups. Keyleth, Percy, Vax, and Vex are in the Fey Realm, trying to find another “Vestige Of Divergence.” These vestiges are incredibly powerful magical artifacts that could help Vox Machina defeat the Chroma Conclave, a dragon alliance that threatens all of Exandria.

The journey through the Fey Realm is special for Percy, who read all about this dimension in books as a youth. Unfortunately, the information he gleaned from those tales proves largely inaccurate or inconsequential. Percy slides into a leadership position out of sheer excitement. When he fails, we see the bonds with his team more clearly.

Vax is already struggling as the new champion of the Matron Of Ravens, and Percy’s shortcomings frustrate him. Vax lashes out at his friend, while Keyleth and Vex comfort and defend Percy. Keyleth is simply being kind, for she knows that Percy means well. Vex, on the other hand, may be falling for Percy.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA S2 E8 – “THE ECHO TREE”

Romance had been a weak spot for this show, but this week finally makes the love stories sing. Percy is clearly into Vex, and the will-they/won’t-they subplot is tantalizing. Scanlan and Pike reveal themselves as the cutest potential couple on the show if Scanlan starts thinking with his heart instead of his crotch.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2, Episode 8 is “The Echo Tree.” Directed by Alicia Chan and written by May Chan, this story gives some important context to the family history of Vex and Vax. The city of their father was magically transported to the Fey Realm. The twins abandoned their home long ago, for their father was a cruel and cold man. Vex still carries a lot of trauma from this failed relationship, and her reunion with her father pushes her emotions to the brink.

The darkness inside Vex is the focal point of “The Echo Tree.” Watching her overcome the despair inside is nothing short of inspirational. The battle where this transformation occurs is dynamic, riveting, and action-packed. While the epic quest through the Fey Realm unfolds, the rest of Vox Machina face a different set of challenges.

Scanlan, Grog, and Pike’s journey together takes a surprising turn when the berserker loses his muscles. Grog realized that the vampiric blade, Craven Edge, was corrupting him. He destroyed the cursed weapon, but it stole his strength in the process. An atrophied Grog fell into the care of the unexpectedly fatherly Scanlan while Pike led them to refuge.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA S2 E9 – “TEST OF PRIDE”

After a delightful road-trip musical number, our heroes find the healer they need, Pikes great-great-grandpa Wilhand or “Pop Pop,” who comes to their aid. Grog is still far from full strength as he tells Pike his tragic, bloody origin story.

The Legend of Vox Machina, Season 2, Episode 9, “Test Of Pride” is one of the best episodes of the series yet. Directed by Eugene Lee and written by Sam Riegel & Travis Willingham, this episode explores Grog’s history with the “Herd Of Storms”. His uncle Kevdak wields the Titanstone Knuckles, a powerful vestige that greatly enhances his strength.

We learn that Grog used to ride with the Herd as a marauder. Slaughtering and pillaging were the ways of his people. He left that life behind when he met Pop Pop, deciding to spare his life and betray the Herd. Kevdak beat Grog to the brink of death and left him for dead, but a young Pike healed Grog. This epic change of heart began a beautiful and lifelong friendship.
