Exciting news if you’re a fan of Rick and Morty! The beloved cartoon is getting an anime version which is releasing this year. This week, Adult Swim released a mini-trailer for the anime version of Rick and Morty, titled Rick and Morty: The Anime, and yes, it’s in Japanese with English subtitles

Currently, we do not have a release date as yet. However, it would be interesting to see where this storyline goes. It consists of 10 episodes and will be directed by Takashi Sano. Sano is known for animes such as Tower of God (2020), Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement (2014), and Lupin III: Burning Memory – Tokyo Crisis (1998). Being a Rick and Morty fan himself, he’s going to do his best to give fans worldwide something they’d love. Sano gave his opinion on this a few months back which has convinced fans he’d do a great job:
“Hello. I’m Sano, the director of Rick and Morty: The Anime, and as the director, I would like to assure you that I’m also a huge fan of the original Rick and Morty. I believe there are many Rick and Morty fans all over the world. And I’m truly honored to be chosen to create a new Rick and Morty story out of all of them. But with that honor comes a lot of pressure, because the original is just so well made. What I’ve tried to accomplish in these 10 episodes is to take all my favorite parts of watching Rick and Morty, compress them down to extract their essence, and then add a unique Japanese twist.”

The animation is beautifully done and would have fans wondering what direction the show would go in. Even if you aren’t an anime fan, you definitely should give the version a try. Especially as it’s only 10 episodes. The series will adapt various themes and events from the main series. However, per Warner Bros. Discovery, this new series will stand on its own as an original work.
So it looks like the scientist and his grandson will once again face various Multiverse-straddling shenanigans, which challenge their familial bonds. However, the family will once again have to right to the occasion. Production is being handled by Telecom Animation Film. The same studio behind (Lupin the Third Series, Shenmue the Animation, Tower of God).

Details are still sparse on the upcoming anime series. The only thing we know right now is that it’s due out later this year. It will be interesting to see who will be voicing the iconic characters in Japanese and a possible English-dubbed version.
The 10-episode anime series does not yet have a final release date. It’s expected to air later in 2024 on Adult Swim. More details will be revealed at a later date.
