After nearly 12 years of development, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is finally upon us, but to say Capcom’s fantasy world can be overwhelming would be an understatement.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 emphasizes the “role-play” of role-play games, thrusting players head-first into a massive story set in an even more expansive world. Players will learn how the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 works just as the Arisen does, but this isn’t to say there aren’t helpful tutorials to guide the way. However, if you don’t pay attention (or find yourself mashing buttons), you can easily skip over plenty of helpful tips.

So, whether you need a refresher or initially missed these tutorials, here are some incredibly helpful tips to remember to get the best experience out of Dragon’s Dogma 2

1. Eat Your Golden Trove Beetles

Inventory management and carrying weight is the bane of every Arisen’s existence. You’re very much playing a role when you play Draogn’s Dogma 2, so you can forget about carrying an infinite amount of weapons, armor, and supplies. However, did you know there’s a free item that will boost your (and your main pawn’s) carrying capacity?

We’re talking about the Golden Trove Beetles. Consuming one increases your carrying weight by 0.15 kg, with your main pawn receiving an equal boost. You can find these important (and hopefully delicious) little critters in the wilderness, clinging to trees and other objects. Chances are you probably have a few of them sitting in your inventory. They hardly weigh anything, so you could have stockpiled plenty of them before noticing.

Simply open your inventory, select the Golden Trove Beetle, and eat it to receive an immediate boost to your carrying weight. Just beware of the fake ones, though. If there’s a valuable resource in Dragon’s Dogma 2, there are likely counterfeits, and the Golden Trove Beetle is no exception.

2. Tell Your Pawns to ‘Go!’

Did you know your pawns are capable of more than just pointing out every ladder and chest in Vermund? They can tell you stories, provide important information, and even roast you. However, they can also lead you to valuable items.

Early in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the game introduces you to pawns and everything they can do. If one of your followers informs you of an interesting idea, prompt them to “Go!” by using the commands in the bottom left of the screen (next to the minimap). The pawn will then take the lead, prompting you to follow them. If you’re stuck on a quest, they can lead you to where you need to go or a helpful route. They can also take you to valuable items, like chests and riftstones.

3. Manage Your Inventory

Inventory management is practically a core part of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and it doesn’t take long to max out how much you can carry. However, there are simple ways to help you out.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 allows you to combine certain items, whether as an experiment or through a recipe. Just about every consumable can be combined with another to create potions and meals. This is very helpful when you’re low on health and will also save you some carrying weight. When you combine two items, they essentially take up half the space as they would separately. So, if you’re in dire need of carrying weight, mix some herbs into potions to quickly free up some space.

Pawns also serve as excellent pack mules, carrying any excess materials and items you can’t. If you have maxed out your carrying weight or are just in the “Heavy” zone, offload some of your cargo onto your pawns. Just remember to empty your pawn’s inventory before dismissing them, or you’ll end up like me, sending a pawn away with a greatsword in their pocket, preventing me from unlocking the Warrior class early on.

4. Update Your Pawns’ Gear and Skills

Pawns are essential to completing your Arisen’s journey in Dragon’s Dogma 2. So, just as you wouldn’t neglect your character’s gear and skills, don’t forget to regularly upgrade your main pawn.

Whether you find items in the wild or buy armor and weapons at a vendor, you can give your main pawn new gear at any time. On top of that, you should also be enhancing your companion’s gear whenever you get the chance. This will make them considerably more effective in combat, making your adventure easier. It’ll also make them more attractive for others to hire.

It’s also important not to neglect your main pawn’s skills. When you visit any Vocation Guild, tab over to your main pawn to upgrade their weapon skills, buy new core skills, and select their augments. Your pawn will have a separate bank of currency for these upgrades, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing ones for your character first. I recommend you spend all of your main pawn’s currency every chance you get, as they quickly save up more through combat and leveling up.
