Legendary veteran Hollywood actor Christopher Plummer has sadly passed away at the age of 91.
Plummer was a highly respected actor in the entertainment world and was beloved by many. He won many accolades and accomplishments throughout his long film career. Those awards include: an Oscar, two Tonys, Primetime Emmys, and many more. He was also a hugely successful stage actor, starring in: Cyrano, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, Barrymore, J.B, No Man’s Land, and Inherit The Wind.

After starring in a number of classic films in his youth, Plummer also recently appeared in well-known modern-day films such as Malcolm X, A Beautiful Mind, The New World, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Beginners, Knives Out, and The Last Full Measure. Let’s just say Plummer was involved and starred in many cinematic and film projects, which almost all of them gained critical acclaim. However, the role that will forever immortalize Christopher Plummer and launched him into superstardom was Captain Georg Von Trapp in Sound Of Music alongside legendary actress Julie Andrews.
Christopher Plummer’s Early Life and Career
Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer was born on December 13, 1929 in Toronto. He grew up in Montreal and attended Jennings Private School. Plummer made his first stage debut in 1948 on a production Cymbeline in Canada’s Repertory Theatre in Ottawa. Following his debut he made his first television debut on a CBC production of Othello. After Othello Plummer migrated to New York in the early 1950s.
While living in New York, he worked in live television shows such as Kraft Television Theatre, Hallmark Hall Of Fame, Producers, Showcase, Appointment With Adventure, and Omnibus. Eventually, Plummer was able to star in Broadway and starred in 1954’s The Starcross Story. He eventually landed other Broadway and television projects before finally breaking into the film industry.
Plummer’s first film debut was in Sidney Lumet’s 1958 film Stage Struck. However, his most famous and well-known role for fans and audiences alike was Sound Of Music, which gained highly critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest musical films of all time. Plummer’s performance as Captain Von Trapp was met with high critical praise. Unfortunately, Plummer did not do any singing in the film as his musical numbers were voiced dubbed by Bill Lee.
Nonetheless Plummer’s overall performance was still legendary and what catapulted Plummer to superstardom. After Sound Of Music, Plummer was involved in many other films before eventually going back to television. He starred in the NBC miniseries The Moneychangers, winning a primetime Emmy Award for his work.
Additionally, Plummer won an Tony award for his role in the musical Cyrano. Plummer ended the century with a high profile film The Insider, co-starring Al Pacino and Russell Crowe. Plummer performance on the film was also met with high praise. As the new millennia began, Plummer did not back away or retire from acting, instead starring in many other film projects. After all his hard work in the film industry, Plummer finally won an Oscar in 2011 for Best Supporting actor in the film Beginners. He even received the Canadian Screen Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Christopher Plummer will always forever be an iconic individual in the Entertainment World. His accolades, achievements, and work will always be legendary. Plummer brought joy to many filmgoers and audiences. His work through stage and Broadway will forever be as iconic. However, it’s his performance in the Sound Of Music that will forever give us everlasting and amazing memories. Plummer has done many film and TV projects that I haven’t mentioned. However those projects will always be a piece of Plummer’s amazing work over a long career.
Plummer is survived by his third wife actress Elaine Taylor, and his daughter Amanda Plummer with first wife Tammy Grimes. As Plummer would say in his iconic role Captain Von Trapp “I shall not be seeing, you again for a very long time, I would like to sing for you now, a love song, I know you love. I pray that you will never let it die”. Edelweiss.
