The much anticipated Project Luminous has been revealed as a monumental Star Wars story told by multiple authors across novels, young adult novels, and comics. These books will come from a number of publishers including Disney Lucasfilm Press, IDW Publishing, Del Rey, and Marvel. The question that kicked off the upcoming story known as Star Wars: The High Republic came from author Cavan Scott (Star Wars Adventures), who asked, “What scares the Jedi?”

This question was the spark that ignited the idea for Star Wars: The High Republic’s central conflict. A team was brought together to create this new large-scale project, which also includes authors Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando), Justina Ireland (Spark of Resistance), Claudia Gray (Master & Apprentice), and Daniel Jose Older (Last Shot). Together, they worked to create Star Wars: The High Republic at Skywalker Ranch.

Star Wars: The High Republic is set 200 years before the Skywalker Saga began. During an era of peace and Galactic Republic expansion, this story will take a look at the Jedi in their prime, when they were known as “The Guardians of Peace and Justice”. These books will feature new adventures following a catastrophic event known as “The Great Disaster”, an event that kicks off Soule’s novel, Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi

Original characters will also be introduced, with a core set of heroes that will grow as the series continues. New villains known as The Nihil will come to light in the wake of “The Great Disaster”. They are described as “Space Vikings”, ready and willing to kill whoever to get whatever they want. The Jedi of this time are described as “The Jedi Knights of the Roundtable”, and they are the protectors of the Galactic Republic.

Due to the expansion of The Galactic Republic into different territory, there will also be a unique style of Jedi described to be similar to “Texas Rangers” patrolling this new frontier.

Star Wars: The High Republic will not overlap with any film or television projects, existing or in production, at this time. However, as James Waugh (VP, Franchise Content & Strategy at Lucasfilm) said, “What if publishing was more of an incubation place?”

So, depending on popularity, could Project Luminous potentially be where the next Star Wars film saga comes from following the ending of the Skywalker Saga? Five books will be the start of Star Wars: The High Republic, with more promised to follow. The first set of books and comics will be debuted at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in August 2020, and the series of interconnected stories will kick off with Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule.

The novel will be release on August 25. Preorders are available now on Amazon. The rest of the series is as follows:

  • Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, a novel by Charles Soule
  • Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage, a middle grade novel by Justina Ireland
  • Star Wars: The High Republic, a Marvel comic series by Cavan Scott
  • Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark, a young adult novel by Claudia Gray
  • Star Wars: The High Republic Adventure, an IDW comic series by Daniel Jose Older

Concept art has been released for the upcoming books created by artist including Phil Noto and Iani McCaag (who famously designed Darth Maul for Phantom Menace).
