BOX OFFICE WATCH: ONWARD LEADS THE LOWEST BOX OFFICE IN 20 YEARS

Movie theaters have had an unprecedented low outcome this weekend due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. With the lowest box office since 1995, this has had and will continue to have a huge impact on theaters and movie goers alike. Among the last run of new releases this month, Disney Pixar’s Onward was the only one to make over $10 million this weekend. 

Onward tops the box office two weekends in a row, but its low opening weekend of only $39.1 million made it the third lowest Pixar opening weekend in history. It made $10.6 million in its second weekend in theaters. In total, Onward has made $60.36 million domestically and $101.99 million worldwide. The following weeks don’t look any better, given theaters closing in New York and Los Angeles, and those that are still open only filling to 50% capacity. Onward may turn out to be Pixar’s lowest grossing film.

The Rest Of This Weekend’s Box Office

Sony’s Bloodshot came in at second at the box office, making $9.1 million domestically for its opening weekend and $23.7 million worldwide. Bloodshot is Valiant Comics’ attempt at building a cinematic universe like the MCU. Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel as a Marine who was killed and then resurrected with superpowers by a mysterious agency that has turned him into a killing machine that they control. 

Bloodshot opened in 50 markets this past weekend, debuting at #1 in more than half of them and making $15.1 million in international markets. Bloodshot defied critical expectations, earning a “B” on CinemaScore and an Audience Score of 78% on Rotten Tomato. 

Lionsgate’s I Still Believe, based on Jeremy Camp’s memoir of the same name, is a Christian romantic drama that follows singer-songwriter Camp’s love story with his first wife, Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I Still Believe opened this weekend at third at the box office with $9.1 million and played in 3,250 theaters. I Still Believe has an “A” on CinemaScore and an Audience Score of 99% on Rotten Tomato. 

Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man came in at fourth at the box office, making $5.89 million this weekend for a total of $64.3 million domestically. The Invisible Man broke $100 million worldwide for a total of $122.3 million. The success of The Invisible Man has led to more Universal Classic Monster movies already in the works, with news of Blumhouse producing a Dracula reboot. 

Blumhouse’s The Hunt is the last new release this past weekend, coming in at fifth in the box office and bringing in $5.3 million for its opening weekend. The Hunt follows 12 strangers who wake up in a clearing with no idea how they got there and discover they are being hunted by a group of wealthy elite. The Hunt takes a satirical look at the divide between the political left and right. The Hunt was initially scheduled for release on September 27, 2019, but Universal delayed the release after news of two mass shootings. The Hunt earned only a “C+” Cinemascore and 65% Audience Score on Rotten Tomato. 

Sonic The Hedgehog came in at sixth at the box office, making it the first time it isn’t in the top 5 since it debuted and bringing in $2.52 million this weekend for $145.8 million domestically. Sonic ran past the $300 million mark worldwide for a total of $306.5 million. 

The Way Back sports drama came in at seventh at the box office with $2.4 million. In its second weekend The Way Back has made a total of $13.4 million domestically. 

The Call of the Wild getting bumped down to eighth at the box office, with The Way Back taking the spot just below Sonic for the first time, brought in $2.2 million this weekend for a domestic total of $62 million. 20^th Century’s The Call of the Wild crossed the $100 million mark worldwide making $107.3 million.

Focus Features Emma dropped from number six to number nine at the box office, bringing in $1.29 million for a domestic total of $9.9 million and worldwide total of $25.1 million. Bad Boys for Life is tenth at the box office, only bringing in $1.1 million. The domestic total is brought up to $204.3 million and worldwide total is at $418.9 million. 

COVID-19, or Coronavirus, is now classified as a global pandemic and will continue to have a huge impact on theaters with a number of them closing and the ones still open now only holding 50% capacity. Many upcoming major releases have been pushed back, including the live action Mulan remake, the latest Bond film No Time To Die, A Quiet Place II, and the latest installment of The Fast and The Furious franchise F9 which has been pushed back to 2021.

The only upcoming major films not yet delayed are Trolls World Wide and Black Widow. Trolls World Wide is a sequel to the 2016 animated movie Trolls and it is scheduled to release April 10, 2020. Black Widow is set to release May 1, 2020 as of right now. With no new movies being released in the upcoming weekend and more movie theaters likely closing it will be interesting to see what happens.

Will the upcoming releases be delayed until the pandemic is over or could they possibly be released on demand for people to enjoy at home?
