In 2024 we’ll be seeing a fresh face for The Karate kid reboot, but, we’ll be seeing Jonathan Entwistle’s familiar face to direct the film.
Jonathan Entwistle, the mind behind Netflix’s The End Of The F…ing World, I Am Not Okay With This, and the highly anticipated Power Rangers cinematic universe will be reimagining another gem as he will be directing Sony’s upcoming reboot of The Karate Kid.
Some of you may want to sit down for what I am about to tell you, there is good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news, for those of you who do not know, Jonathan Entwistle’s upcoming Karate Kid reboot is a hard reboot, there are no ties to the original trilogy, the beloved Netflix series Cobra Kai, or the “Miyagiverse”.
As for the good news, there are no ties to the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan either, more importantly, this reboot is not intended to replace the “Miyagiverse” in any way. The characters we love from the original trilogy and Cobra Kai will live on, their stories are not done yet.
What’s This New Karate Kid Movie About?
The official plot details are not known to the public yet, however, our friends at Murphy’s Multiverse may know a thing or two. According to them, the story revolves around a small 17-year-old Chinese boy referred to as “Li”, who is already proficient in Kung Fu instead of Karate as he moves to Brooklyn, New York with his mother. He is also said to be struggling with a past tragedy, which drives a wedge between him and his doctor mom, who has managed to handle the same tragedy in her own way. “Li” would then meet a fellow high school student named Mia, and father, Victor, at a pizza restaurant.
In a role reversal of the first Karate Kid movie, “Li” would find himself mentoring Victor in the ways of Kung Fu.

Now take those details with grain of salt, the plot has not been confirmed yet. Speaking for myself, I think the supposed plot has potential. It almost feels like a prequel with a young Mr. Miyagi as “The Karate Kid”.
The only thing I don’t understand is why the focus on Kung Fu instead of Karate, assuming that the plot details are accurate, I hope to see the story make sense out of that.
