The Illuminerdi can exclusively reveal Ryan Carter will be reprising his role as Heckyl in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury and will appear as the Dark Ranger.

Carter first appeared in the Power Rangers franchise as Heckyl in Power Rangers Dino (Super) Charge. In those seasons, the character was a Jekyll and Hyde type character called Heckyl and Snide. By the end of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge, Heckyl was able to separate from Snide and join the Rangers.

During the airing of this season, it was heavily speculated by fans that Heckyl would become a Ranger based on Deathryuger from Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. However, this Ranger form never appeared in the show, despite the Dino Charge Morpher toy having a sound for an unknown “Talon Ranger.”

The Origins of the Dark Ranger

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios) Issue 35

After the events of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge, Heckyl became the keeper of the Dark Energem, which previously turned him evil. Heckyl and Zenowing, the Dino Charge Silver Ranger, returned to Heckyl’s home planet, Sentai 6, to guard the Dark Energem. Unbeknownst to Zenowing, Heckyl started building a Morpher for the Dark Energem based on his Titano Charge Morpher. He is then able to morph into the Dino Charge Dark Ranger.

Heckyl uses his new power to kill Lord Arcanon, who destroyed Sentai 6 in a previous timeline. Shortly after this, the Dark Energem attempts to corrupt Heckyl again by turning him back into Snide. Zenowing showed up in the nick of time to save Heckyl from yet another dark fate while sacrificing himself in the process. Later Heckyl was joined by almost every other Ranger at the time to stop the evil Lord Drakkon from shattering the Morphin Grid for good.

Heckyl joined the Promethea Rangers to take on an evil Morphin Master Praetor, as he sought out a powerful source of energy called the Solarix to obtain “vortex energy” in the “Beyond the Grid” storyline. The Promethea Rangers later became the Solar Rangers to take on the same villain. Heckyl has yet to return as the Dark Ranger until now…

What Will The Dark Ranger Be Doing In Power Rangers Cosmic Fury?

Since the Dark Ranger has so far only appeared in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics, it is unknown how he will be adapted for the show. In the comics, Heckyl has had many space adventures, so it makes sense for him to appear in a space-themed season. However, the comics are usually considered to take place in a separate universe from the show, so some of these events may be altered to fit more closely with the timeline of the show.

In the show, it was established that he is an alien from Sentai 6, so they could just keep his origin and leave out the stuff with the Promehtea and Solar Rangers. Although it would be cool to see Heckyl reference his time as one of the Solar Rangers to the Cosmic Fury Rangers. Only time will tell as Power Rangers Cosmic Fury airs exclusively on Netflix in Fall 2023.
