After years of fighting for the film’s release, both from the fans and from the cast and crew, Zack Snyder’s Justice League was finally announced on May 20th of 2020. The announcement of the film was followed by a THR article that revealed Snyder’s ambitious hopes and plans for the project, bringing on speculation across the industry about just what shape the project will take.
While it’s still unknown if Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be a film as originally intended, or a TV miniseries as the director hopes. Jason Momoa has blessed all of us with our first look at the newly revived franchise, answering some questions while raising several others.
The teaser shows Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince, better known as Wonder Woman, gazing at an ancient depiction of Darkseid with a look of sheer terror on her face. We’re talking about the hero who took down Doomsday and Ares, two colossally powerful entities in their own right. Seeing one of the DCEU’s strongest characters absolutely petrified at a mere painting of the Lord Of Apokolips should tell DC fans unfamiliar with Darkseid all they need to know.

As Diana stares on fearfully, Lex Luthor’s message to Batman at the end of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice sets the tone and reminds us of Luthor’s dark designs. The juxtaposition of Luthor’s maniacal desire to bring hell on earth and Diana’s sheer terror at the thought of reliving Apokoliptian warfare is genius, and it paints Darkseid in an extremely foreboding light.
The bell’s already been rung…And they’ve heard it…out in the dark, among the stars. Ding dong, The God is dead.
The last shot of the trailer is Darkseid and his army, set to Junkie XL’s dark, intense score. Darkseid is coming, and I couldn’t be more excited. the HBO Max logo appears and the teaser ends. With a first teaser this strong, I can’t even imagine how incredible the first full length trailer might be. This teaser only showcased three of the film’s characters after all!
It’s fascinating that Darkseid, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor are the only three included in our first look at the long awaited film. How large of a role will each of them play? Possibly my biggest issue with Joss Whedon’s film was how it utterly wasted Wonder Woman, so it’s refreshing to know she’s getting another chance.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League First Look
Darkseid and Luthor are two incredible characters that were all but absent from Whedon’s cut, and this teaser has given me concrete hope for their expanded roles in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
