The second season of The Mandalorian promises to reveal more about the connection between the Darksaber and Moff Gideon’s past.
LucasFilm’s hit show for Disney+ managed to nab an impressive 15 Emmy nominations including Taika Waititi for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, Best Drama, and Giancarlo Esposito for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama.
The Mandalorian managed to keep The Child, aka Baby Yoda, a secret until the premiere and there was another surprise for Star Wars fans. Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito was introduced as the mysterious villain Moff Gideon in the final two episodes of the first season of The Mandalorian. The first season finale ended with Moff Gideon’s tie fighter crashing and the villain cutting himself out of the ship with the famed Darksaber.
The Darksaber Has History
For fans of the Star Wars animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels this is not a new weapon, but the reveal was unexpected. The Darksaber was first introduced in The Clone Wars series by Pre Vizsla whose ancestor, Tarre Viszla, was the first Mandalorian Jedi. House Viszla took the saber from the Jedi temple after Tarre Viszla’s death. It became a symbol for House Vizsla and later the terrorist group led by Pre Vizsla, Death Watch.
Darth Maul defeated Pre Vizsla in the fifth season of The Clone Wars and took over not only Death Watch, but Mandalore itself. The Darksaber is next seen in Rebels when Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian, finds it in Maul’s layer. Sabine returns home with the Darksaber and later gives it to Bo-Katan to unite Mandalore in rebellion against the Empire.

Knowing that Bo-Katan was the last one in possession of the saber, it was a shock when Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon had it. Katee Sackhoff, the voice of Bo-Katan, is reported to bring her character to live-action in the upcoming season of The Mandalorian which will hopefully shed light on how Moff Gideon acquired the saber.
GIANCARLO ESPOSITO ON THE DARKSABER AND IT’S CONNECTION TO MOFF GIDEON’S PAST
Giancarlo Esposito told Deadline that the Darksaber will be the key to his character’s mysterious past.
“You’ll see more of the Darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world. Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later. (The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s past which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”
It seems like the Darksaber will play an important role in the new season of The Mandalorian, with Moff Gideon’s past coming to light. While fans may know about the history of the Darksaber there are a lot of questions about how it got into the hands of Giancarlo Esposito’s character. Hopefully more will be revealed about what exactly happened to Mandalore and Moff Gideon’s connection to the planet.
When Moff Gideon first confronts Mando and his team he knows things about each of them including Mando’s real name, Din Djarin. Moff Gideon was involved in The Purge where most of Mandalore was wiped out. Mando is one of the few survivors with others being scattered across the galaxy and in hiding.

With other characters reported to be making appearances not only Katee Sackhoff’s Bo Katan, but Temuera Morrison is said to appear as bounty hunter Boba Fett, and Rosario Dawson is reported to be making her debut as the beloved Clone Wars and Rebels character Ahsoka Tano. The new season looks to dive deeper into Star Wars lore bringing aspects of the animated series into the live action world.
