After many months of teases, rumors, promos, and short interviews, we finally have our first look of NBA Superstar Lebron James’ new upcoming film Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Our very first look this film was back in August of last year, when James released a video of himself with the new Tune Squad Jersey in his show Uninterrupted. The new jersey design featured a orange and blue motif, but also had some elements of its original 1996 design worn by NBA Hall Of Famer Michael Jordan in the original Space Jam.

The second mention of the film was when James was a special guest on Spectrum Sportsnet’s Road Trippin, where he revealed the film’s plot and stated that A New Legacy was not a sequel to the 1996 film. Finally, James and Bugs Bunny promoted a game creation contest based on the film, which was sponsored by X-Box. Now, real footage from the film has finally been made available.

The first look footage was revealed by an HBO Max teaser, which previewed all of Warner Bros studios coming out this year in their streaming service and in cinemas simultaneously.

The teaser for the A New Legacy was very brief, but seeing the first footage of the live-action and animation hybrid film is exciting nonetheless.

In the short teaser, around the seven second mark, you can see brief footage James and Bugs Bunny in the upcoming film. The two protagonists look horrified as another character is lifted up by a very bright light or tractor beam before being lifted up in inside a scoreboard.

We also see some members of the Looney Tunes, or Tune Squad, in the background – including iconic characters such as Tweety Bird, Lola Bunny, and Sylvester The Cat.

As mentioned by James on Road Trippin, the Monstars will not be the villains in A New Legacy. Instead the villains are rumored to be digitized versions of Warner Bros Intellectual property who are, according to James, “out of this world”. As in the original Space Jam, we can expect some current NBA stars to make an appearance: Kyle Kuzma, Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, and Anthony Davis. WNBA Stars Diana Turasi, Chiney Ogwumike, and Nneka Ogwumike are also rumored to appear.

Don Cheadle is reported to play the main villain, named Al-G.

Plans for a Space Jam sequel have been discussed for many years, with original concepts being dropped. The final nail in the coffin was when star Michael Jordan decided not to reprise his role. Instead, Warner Bros decided to do another live-action animated hybrid film called Looney Tunes: Back In Action with Brendan Fraser cast as the lead.

After so many years, fans’ dreams of a new Space Jam have finally come to a fruition. Even though it’s not a direct sequel, we can expect homages and easter eggs to the original Space Jam. Hopefully King James’s new film does indeed give love and respect to the legacy of the 1996 original classic.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is scheduled to premiere simultaneously on HBO Max and in open Cinemas on July 16th 2021.
