2021 has been quite a year for Zack Snyder and it’s only going to get wilder from here on out. After shaking up the industry with the unprecedented release of his cut of the Justice League, the director is back again and ready to shake up the zombie genre with his upcoming film, Army of the Dead.
Snyder returns to the sub-genre where he got his start after his theatrical debut with 2004’s Dawn of the Dead. His newest offering, Army of the Dead, revisits the world of zombie infestations while the director has added a new wrinkle to the genre, a heist.
Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Omari Hardwicke (Spell), and host of other actors who help to bring this disaster picture to life.

The film follows Bautista’s Scott Ward, a veteran who has found a way to live the simple life during the zombie apocalypse. The story kicks into gear when he receives an offer that he can’t pass up: To steal $200 million dollars sitting in a Las Vegas vault within the heart of the infestation. Additionally, he and his crew only have 32 hours before the government drops a nuclear bomb on the city.
Army of the Dead Official Trailer
The newest trailer gives viewers their best look at the tone and story for Army of the Dead yet. There has been no shortage of zombie related properties over the past couple of decades, whether you are looking at The Walking Dead or to theatrical releases such as World War Z or 28 Days Later. However, Zack Snyder’s trademark style of cinematography and the fresh heist element might be enough to push the boundaries of the sub-genre.
The scale of the story and action looks to be truly theatrical, so it will be interesting to see how the film performs. Particularly on the heels of the release of the Justice League, which captured the attention of the film industry for a good two weeks. Now with Snyder moving on from the DCEU, it should be interesting to track the next phase of his career that begins with the release of Army of the Dead this May.
Army of the Dead Official Synopsis
From filmmaker Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Zack Snyder’s Justice League), ARMY OF THE DEAD takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world. When Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a former zombie war hero who’s now flipping burgers on the outskirts of the town he now calls home, is approached by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), it’s with the ultimate proposition: break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone to retrieve $200 million sitting in a vault beneath the strip before the city is nuked by the government in 32 hours.
With little left to lose, Ward takes on the challenge, assembling a ragtag team of experts for the heist. With a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in, only one thing’s for certain in the greatest heist ever attempted: survivors take all. Starring Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, Samantha Win, Michael Cassidy, Richard Cetrone, and Garret Dillahunt.
