A new leak has revealed new concept art for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Summer release of What If…?
Marvel Studios has undergone an amazing transformation during its fourth phase of filmmaking. The move to expand the MCU into the small screen with the DIsney+ streaming service now seems almost omniscient, considering how the entire film industry, and world, was turned upside by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The move proved to be an immediate success as WandaVision kicked off the venture to spectacular results and their second effort, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, has been trending on social media weekly. The next series in the pipeline, Loki, has already begun its promotional campaign and is poised to be the next MCU success.
What If…? First Look Trailer
However, this summer Marvel Studios will be diving headfirst into the world of animation with What If…?. The upcoming animated series is a first for the core MCU timeline and the premise of the show promises to break all the rules. What If…? will be hosted by The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), while the series will explore the various films produced by Marvel Studios and will twist various elements of each movie’s plot over the first season’s 10-episode run.
Examples include: An alternate telling of Captain America: The First Avenger, where Peggy Carter gets the super soldier serum and Steve Rogers pilots Howard Stark’s Iron Man armor. A revamp of Guardians of the Galaxy that finds T’Challa abducted by aliens and becoming Star-Lord, instead of Peter Quill, and there even promises to be an episode that finds the Avengers becoming zombies.
What If…? Concept Art Leak
A recent leak, via the Marvel Studios Spoilers Twitter account, revealed new looks at Gamora, Ultron, the Collector. Loki, and the Hulkbuster.
While the art is low-res and grainy, we do get to see a few details that tease some of the fun that we can expect in the What If…? series. One of the more glaring pictures is of Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora. The daughter of Thanos appears to have taken his war armor and signature blade, which seems to indicate that Gamora could be continuing his genocidal crusade in the alter-timeline series. Additionally, Gamora is known for her prowess with blades, so this certainly looks to be an episode to look out for.

We also see Ultron in new armor and looking to be in total control. However, his lifted facemask could be an interesting development. Is the red face revealing his glowing inner energy source, or could this version of Ultron actually be Vision? It certainly will be fun to find out.
Guardian of the Galaxy’s The Collector appears to have been hitting push-ups throughout the pandemic, giving him a new body. While, the modern Hulkbuster armor (different from the rudimentary prototype Rogers pilots in the early looks at his episode) seems to have Bucky Barnes or another bearded MCU character at the helm.
The new look at some of the MCU’s most popular characters signals an unexpected journey for long-time Marvel fans and could shake up the formula, while setting the stage for the remainder of Phase 4. Marvel plans to continue to explore alternate dimensions and the multiverse at large in both Spiderman: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so the groundbreaking show may prove to simply be the appetizer before the main meal. And if we have learned anything this past year, the hunger never goes away for Marvel fans.
