Silver Surfer: Oscar Winner Adam McKay Still Interested In Directing “Incredible” Project For Marvel Studios

Academy Award winning director Adam McKay has doubled down on his desire to direct a Silver Surfer movie for Marvel Studios.

Director Adam McKay recapitulated his desire of directing a Silver Surfer movie for Marvel Studios.

Anchorman director Adam McKay at one point almost ended up helming Ant-Man for Marvel Studios, but as we know it didn’t come to fruition and he spent the last few years, making Oscar-nominated films like The Big Short and Vice. However, he has long wanted to make a comic book movie and has expressed his interest in the superhero genre from time to time.

In the past, Adam McKay has said several times that Silver Surfer is a project that he remains intent on developing. A lot has changed since he last spoke about the property. The rights to the Herald of Galactus were held by 20th Century Fox back then. However, the Silver Surfer is now part of the Marvel Studios stable.

Recently while talking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker explained why the project didn’t happen before and said that he’s still interested in helming a Silver Surfer film for Marvel. Once again reigniting the flames and putting a word out in the universe that he still wants to direct it.

MKay explained:

“Silver Surfer was tricky. There was something about it, because we did look into it. I think it’s connected to the Fantastic Four and because of that kind of lives under its own umbrella. But there was something that got in the way of it cause we did look into it a couple of years ago, but I could be wrong. I could be misremembering, but there was some reason it didn’t happen or someone else was already working on it. But no, I was definitely into it because that would be a very easy one.”

Adam McKay also expressed an interest in catching up with Kevin Feige and Marvel to discuss the cosmic character and shared his thoughts on the direction he’d take the hero on the big screen.

He continued:

“If you look at Galactus and the origin story of the Silver Surfer, how he sacrificed himself for his home planet. Norrin Radd, was that his name? I haven’t thought that name in a long time. That would be a very easy one to make it an environmental allegory. I think that could be an incredible movie, and I think it could be visually the most stunning Marvel movie that’s ever been made. I haven’t lost interest in that. In fact, now that you mention it maybe I’ll lob a phone call and see what’s going on.”

This sounds like Adam McKay has really interesting ideas for the Galactus’ herald, and it’s a shame this film hasn’t become a reality yet. As the director said, a Silver Surfer story has potential and could be visually stunning. Silver Surfer is a character that many comic book fans would love to see a stand-alone movie be made because the Surfer has his fair group of fans.

We can all agree that the take on the Surfer in the 2007 Fox film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer was disappointing. I believe there will definitely be an audience excited for a Silver Surfer movie in the MCU given that he is introduced in another film first and was done properly.

Maybe now that the hero is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can believe that he’s high on Feige’s list of upcoming heroes, and the Anchorman director could get his chance on the Fantastic Four ally sooner rather than later. For now, though, one might hope for seeing both Galactus and his Herad in Jon Watts’ upcoming reboot.
