A new Superman movie is currently in the works as Warner Bros. is seeking a Black actor to play the Man of Steel and director Zack Snyder shares his thoughts on the development.
The news broke that J.J. Abrams will produce the new Superman film via his Bad Robot label, along with Ta-Nehisi Coates, acclaimed Black Panther comic writer, writing the script. The concept is that this Superman will be set in a Elseworld scenario, which means that it will not overwrite the films that have previously starred Henry Cavill.
There is no word on the possibility of whether the new Superman will be the focus going forward, or if Cavill’s iteration will still make an appearance in future titles. There are hopes among some that with other movies being made in the DCEU, it may lead to Cavill returning.

As for now, the search is on for Black actors to portray the new Man of Steel and it will be interesting to see who they cast. This concept will be refreshing as this version of Kal-El could have a character with different background elements compared to the original, which could change both the general character and experiences that they may have.
Zack Snyder On The New Direction For Superman
Justice League’s Zack Snyder was tasked with rebooting the hero for the DC Extended Universe with 2013’s Man of Steel, but during an interview with the Radio Times, Snyder was asked to share his thoughts on the WB’s plans for the character that seem to exclude Cavill.
“My feeling is that I love JJ [Abrams], I love what he’s done in the past. I’m interested to see what happens, it’s a bold and cool and probably long overdue move. But I love Henry [Cavill] as Superman, of course I do. He’s my Superman.”
“I’m not really involved in any of the decision-making at Warner Brothers in any way. So, I guess for me it’s just wait and see what they do with this and how it manifests itself. But on the surface, it seems interesting.”

This new Superman film is not the only one that will exist outside of the main DC Film continuity as other films, including The Batman and Todd Phillip’s Joker (2019), also exist outside of the core timeline. It’s unlikely, but it would be interesting, if these titles link together with the new Man of Steel.
For the new Superman movie, Abrams will not be helming the film, but the director shortlist has been rumored to include Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Beast Alliance), J.D. Dillard (Sweetheart), Regina King (One Night in Miami), and Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah).
