New York Comic Con is taking place this weekend and is featuring tons of exciting panels including a panel for The Legend of Vox Machina animated series. During The Legend of Vox Machina panel the cast of full Critical Role, who star in and executive produce the series, talked a bit about the process of making the highly anticipated animated series and revealed the long awaited premiere date.
The cast talked a bit about how they adapted their first campaign which has over four hundred hours of content into an animated series beginning with the fan favorite Briarwood arc. The panel ended with a sneak peek at the title sequence of the series that gives Critters an inside look into the beautiful animation style and music of The Legend of Vox Machina. The title sequence features the party fighting a number of enemies, magic, and teases some of the locations Vox Machina will visit in the series.
But the moment that Critters have been waiting for since The Legend Of Vox Machina was first announced finally came at the end of the sneak peek. Critical Role has officially announced the premiere date of the Amazon Prime original series The Legend of Vox Machina, February 4, 2022.
During the panel, Sam Riegel explained that by beginning the series with two episodes that weren’t from the livestream it allows the entire audience to start off on the same page, even those who aren’t as familiar with Critical Role, or haven’t watched the first campaign. Matt Mercer clarified that while the events of these episode aren’t from the live stream they are in canon with the origins of Vox Machina when it was a home game.
THE CAST OF CRITICAL ROLE BREAK DOWN WHY THE BRIARWOOD ARC IS A MAJOR FOCUS IN THE FIRST SEAON OF THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA
During the panel Sam Riegel recalled why the Briarwood arc felt so important while they were playing in Campaign 1 and what made it the right starting point for the animated series.
“That was the first time that it sort of like clicked for all of us that, this isn’t just a game, we’re not just goofing with each other anymore. We’re telling a real story here. I think it’s like for me it’s the first time that it ever kind of felt like art.”
Laura Bailey also recalled that this was the arc where the relationships between the characters began to grow and become deeper. The cast talked about recording together, before the pandemic, and how there was an unforgettable magic to those sessions. They also revealed that there was a lot of improvisation during the recording sessions, both in person and remote, with Liam explaining , “All we really did was take the table away.”
During the panel Critters were offered an inside look into this magic when the cast did a live reading of a fully animated scene from The Legend of Vox Machina. This scene, which can be watched below, is the first official clip of the series. It begins with a drinking competition, which Grog of course wins, before quickly devolving into a bar brawl with a particularly rude bar patron.
Critical Role launched their Kickstarter campaign to fund an animated special with a goal of $750,000 on March 4, 2019. Critters surpassed this goal within the first hour and within the 45-day Kickstarter campaign Critical Role raised over $11 million with more than 88,000 contributors to make The Legend of Vox Machina.
The Legend of Vox Machina is set to premiere on Amazon Prime February 4, 2022. While Critters eagerly await the animated series, Critical Role Campaign 3 debuts October 21, 2021.
