Eternals fans, this is gonna make you pretty happy. Eternals haters, not so much.
When Eternals was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, a smash hit cast was announced, with a great director and creative team. The world thought, what could go wrong? It turns out a lot, a lot could go wrong. It’s one of those films where there’s just a lot of controversy. Sitting at 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, and receiving a B on CinemaScore, Eternals has been publicly shamed by both critics and audiences alike. However, it earned $71M at the domestic box office, the third-highest debut of the pandemic.
One main question for the film, what will the at-home audience think of it? The film has been both a success and a failure at the global box office, but what will streamers think of the movie on its’ Nielsen charts? Now, we have a date for when we can expect at least some of that data to come through.
Eternals To Arrive On Digital And Disney+ On January 12, DVD On February 25
Disney has announced that Marvel Studios’ Eternals will arrive on Disney+ and PVOD on January 12, and will be available on Blu-Ray/DVD and to rent on February 25. The film will be available for free to stream on Disney+, but is expected to have the usual $19.99 or $29.99 price point on Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube Movies, etc. It’ll be available to rent for an estimated $5.99 or $6.99 on February 25, when it’ll also be available to purchase on DVD, Blu-Ray, and of course, the steelbook collector’s edition.

While it’s not a surprise to hear that the film will be available so soon (Disney had previously outlined a 45-day window for all its remaining 2021 titles), it’s surprising to see that there will be nearly a 45-day gap between when it’ll be available to buy, and when it’ll be available to rent. Some think that this is due to the fact that the movie wasn’t highly received on Rotten Tomatoes, and so Disney wants to have enough time for people to buy the film before renting it. This is so people can experience the film for itself, and not be limited to only 48 hours to view it.
What did you think of this news? Are you going to buy/rent Eternals when it comes to PVOD? Were you a fan of the film? If not, how come?
