The Belchers are heading to the big screen! Bob’s Burgers, the Emmy Award winning series, has been on the air for eleven seasons and has already been renewed for a twelfth and thirteenth, but before that fans will have the chance to see an all new adventure for the Belcher family in The Bob’s Burgers Movie.

The cast and creatives behind the television series and movie were at WonderCon 2022 where they shared the first six minutes of the new film to an excited audience during their panel.

LOREN BOUCHARD ON THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE BEING PART OF THE GREAT TRADITION OF 2D ANIMATED MOVIES

The Illuminerdi had the opportunity to speak to Loren Bouchard, creator of Bob’s Burgers as well as co-writer, co-director, and co-producer of The Bob’s Burgers Movie, Bernard Derriman, co-director of The Bob’s Burgers Movie, and Nora Smith, co-writer and co-producer of The Bob’s Burgers Movie, about their upcoming theatrical debut. Loren Bourchard explained the importance and artistry of making The Bob’s Burgers Movie 2D especially with how few are being made today.

“To have the same backgrounds that you know already, this is true for us and the fans I think, but then to see it with even more light and shadow and texture is so exciting. But it’s not 3D. We didn’t change how we do the show it’s just a 2D movie, a lovingly made 2D movie, but just with more artist and more time and more care on each background, on each character. And to be able to bring light and shadow into a 2D movie is thrilling for us. It looks to us, hopefully it does to the audience too, like some of the classic 2D movies. Which they’re not making that many of these days.

So, we’re very aware that we’re part of a great tradition of filmmaking and we hope that the audience comes and sees that as something worthwhile. And that not everything has to be a CG movie. No offense to CG movies, you’re lovely. I watch you too. But I think that when you put a light and a shadow in a 2D movie it’s an artist making a decision. There’s no computer involved. They can’t automatically generate the shadows. Somebody’s got to decide where each one of those goes.”

A key difference between the movie and the series is the amount of time the artists and animators had which allowed them to incorporate fun additions into the film. Bernard Derriman revealed an interesting addition that this time allowed them to incorporate, “Getting into the song sequenced that had dancing. We could never have had the time to do that on the show.” But in terms of the artistry and detail the extra time allowed the artists and animators to add more texture and shadowing into the 2D animation. However, Bernard Derriman made it clear that they wanted the movie to still feel like a part of the show.

BERNARD DERRIMAN TALKS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE FEELING LIKE A PART OF THE SERIES

“And it was great to hear you say that actually, that it still, it feels like part of the show because that was so important. We didn’t want to have massive 3D shots at every turn because it had more budget. We want it to feel like it was still part of the show. So, that was a big thing we were always working on just keeping it feel like it could be in the show just making it a little slicker.”

The Bob’s Burgers Movie will not only be a massive new adventure for fans of the series, but it looks like it will be bringing fun new elements including dance sequences and a more detailed animation into the fold. If the first six minutes are anything to go by the additional time has elevated the animation to the next level, while still keeping the heart and style that fans know and love. 2D animation has largely been replaced by CG on the big screen so it’s not only exciting to see a 2D animated movie, but it is truly impressive once one understands the artistry that goes into every detail.
