Daniel Brühl has teased the potential appearance of Baron Zemo in the upcoming Thunderbolts film.

Back in July Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige blew the roof off of San Diego Comic Com. He walked on stage and just casually revealed the entire Phase 5 of the MCU. That includes a fourth Captain America film called New World Order, 18 episodes of the Daredevil series, and more. But he even continued his presentation with the announcement of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will be the culmination of Marvel Studios’ Multiverse Saga. One of the biggest announcements was the Thunderbolts film, which is set to end Phase 5.

While attendees at SDCC only got to see a title card, two months later at D23, Kevin Feige revealed the official roster of the team with official concept art and brought every member of the team on the stage to the thunderous applause of hundreds of fans. Only the team’s leader Florence Pugh couldn’t attend Disney’s very own convention as she was busy filming Dune: Part Two. But she sent over a video of her greeting her fellow cast members and the attendees.

Fans were caught off-guard with Baron Zemo missing during the roster reveal at D23. Due to the connection between the character and the team in the comics it seemed like a safe bet that the fan-favorite would be a part of the film.

IS BARON ZEMO JOINING THE THUNDERBOLTS?

Daniel Brühl is currently promoting his new film All Quiet On the Western Front. During an interview with RadioTimes, he was asked about his absence on the Thunderbolts roster and his answer was subtle yet intriguing.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Even if I could… I couldn’t, you know…”

When asked if he could explain Baron Zemo’s absence from the cast list Bruhl responded:

“The only thing I can say, everybody knows… I’m not dead!”

We know that Zemo isn’t dead as we’ve seen him getting taken into custody by the Dora Milaje at the end of the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier. His statement that he’s not dead indicates that his absence in the MCU isn’t final, even though it’s worth noting that he probably was just looking for an excuse to not further talk about the topic.

Shortly after the D23 presentation was over the official Marvel website posted an article about the Thunderbolts roster, in which’s URL Baron Zemo’s name was found. It’s also been heavily hinted at by insiders that he is indeed a part of the film, which is being kept a secret…for now.

Thunderbolts will be directed by Jake Schreier and are currently being written by Black Widow writer Eric Pearson. The cast currently includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Baron Zemo will appear in the film. He was an instant fan favorite in Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Marvel know that. It would be quite a waste to not have him steal more scenes in the film about the team he once assembled in the comics. It will be more interesting to see why Marvel didn’t reveal him as part of the roster and therefore couldn’t bring Daniel Brühl on stage.

Thunderbolts hits theaters on July 26, 2024. What do you guys think? Do you think Baron Zemo will appear? Are you excited about the film? Let’s discuss everything in the comments down below and on our social media.
