The Spider-Verse grows even bigger as another two Spideys are rumored to join the fun.
When Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was announced, no one expected it to become such a massive success as it now is. Even when the first teaser trailer was released, fans were still a bit hesitant even though the animation looked gorgeous. But when the film hit theatres in December 2018 everything changed. It got spectacular reviews immediately becoming one of the best-reviewed films of the decade and the film was praised as one of the best-animated films of all time. Into the Spider-Verse also was a box office success and went on to rightfully win the Best Animated feature Oscar.
It comes as no surprise that Sony Pictures Animation quickly greenlit a sequel. And it was late last year that it was announced that the studio isn’t working on just one, but two sequels to the groundbreaking film. They also released short two clips cut together as a first look at the highly anticipated film. While it was first announced as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Part 1 and 2, Sony luckily changed its mind and revealed the new title of the third installment at this year’s CinemaCon: Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
And then back in June, during the Annecy Animation Film Festival, we got some more info on the project as Sony revealed some of the film’s cast and gave us our first look at the villain of the film. Attendees also got to see some clips of the film.
Now with the film sadly still around 8 months away, a new rumor is suggesting that two more highly beloved Spideys are set to join the Spider-Verse.
THE SPIDER-VERSE KEEPS GROWING
The reliable outlet TheCosmicCircus has exclusively revealed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man played by Tom Holland and the Spider-Man from the beloved and highly acclaimed PS4 Spider-Man game are both set to appear in Across the Spider-Verse.
The outlet continued that it is yet unknown if Tom Holland and Yuri Lowenthal will return to voice their respective characters.
It seems safe to assume that a professional voice actor like Lowenthal who loves to play the character in the games will also jump on the opportunity to reprise the role in this project. As for Holland, there could be a case where a deal couldn’t be figured out, but even if that would be the case, I don’t think that MCU Spidey would appear in the sequel then. There are more than enough Spideys that Sony could incorporate it seems unlikely that they would settle for something this half-baked like Holland’s Spider-Man without his voice.

The report continues that one source told the outlet that there also has been discussion to add Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, Josh Keaton’s Spider-Man from the Spectacular Spider-Man TV show, and Christopher Daniel Barnes version from the 90s TV show. But it is yet unclear in which film they’d appear.
This news is very exciting as it would be very interesting to see all these live-action Spider-Man in an animated film. Especially with just this particular animation style that this franchise has it will be interesting to see how the looks of the live-action Spider-Men differentiate from the PS4 Spider-Man or the one from the 90s. Fans have been dying to see Josh Keaton reprise his role as the Spectacular Spider-Man again so this film could become a No Way Home-like event. While some are worried that these characters’ appearances would overshadow Miles, I am almost sure that the filmmakers can handle it just as well as they did in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. June can’t come soon enough.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theatres June 2, 2023.
