“I don’t think you’ve ever seen an action version of Meet the Parents.”
Director Tyler Spindel
The Out-Laws, the action-version of Meet the Parents
Directed by Tyler Spindel, who previously worked on Father of the Year and The Wrong Missy, The Out-Laws follows Owen Browning (Devine), a bank manager who is about to marry the love of his life, Parker (Dobrev). However, during his wedding week, his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits, and he suspects that his in-laws (Brosnan and Barkin) may be the outlaws themselves.

“Click, click, there’s a gun to my head, and my bank is being held hostage, and my bank is being robbed,” Devine, who’s also a producer on the film, says. “And essentially, they say something that leads me to believe it’s my in-laws, and I have to figure out, ‘Is it [them]or is it not?’”
This is Devine’s third collaboration with Netflix, and he gets to share scenes with the legendary Pierce Brosnan himself, who plays an intimidating father-in-law.
“He’s a rogue, he’s an outsider. He’s a kind of lost soul. He and his wife are not who they say they are.We come into town because our daughter’s getting married, and I do not take to this young man, in any shape or form. I find him to be not worthy of my daughter’s heart. And I give him a very hard time in the process of him trying to woo her.”
Piers Brosnan
The film’s ensemble cast includes Michael Rooker, Poorna Jagannathan, Julie Hagerty, Richard Kind, Lil Rel Howery, Blake Anderson, Lauren Lapkus, and Laci Mosley. Dobrev and Devine, who are real-life friends, have great chemistry on screen, and Dobrev praised Devine’s acting skills and called him her favorite co-star.
“He was an incredible, generous actor in the scenes and a great partner. I couldn’t speak more highly of him. He’s just such a great guy and maybe my favorite co-star that I’ve ever worked with.”

Spindel shared that he was excited to work with Brosnan and described his first meeting with the actor as memorable, saying that Brosnan’s handshake was perfect.
“I remember the first time I met him. He just looked into my eyes and shook my hand. And let me tell you, it was just the perfect handshake. He has a firm grip, but it’s not overpowering. He’s dangerous yet safe. His skin is soft, but it’s also rugged. He smells so good.”

As Spindel tells it, he went home that night and had one thing to say to his girlfriend: “Honey, you’re never getting to meet Pierce.”
Brosnan did get to meet his onscreen wife, however. “[It] was a real delight to be able to spend time with Ellen, who I just absolutely adore. And just showing up for work every day and saying, ‘What’s going on? Are you going to do this scene? Are you going to do this? Is this how I’m going to do it?’”

The Out-Laws promises to be a fun ride filled with action, comedy, and family drama. The film is set to release on July 7 on Netflix, and Dobrev said she had a great time watching it and felt like an audience member. So mark your calendars and get ready to meet The Out-Laws.
