It looks like the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 sequel from Warner Bros. has found its Johnny Cage. According to a report by The Wrap, The Boys and The Lord of the Rings star Karl Urban is in final talks to take on the role of the fan-favorite Kombatant, Johnny Cage, for the upcoming sequel.

The film will be a sequel to the 2021 film, inspired by the long-running, iconic fighting video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

Filmmaker Simon McQuoid is reportedly slated to return for the upcoming sequel. Meanwhile, Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy scribe Jeremy Slater wrote the script.

While the 2021 film only ended up making $42 million domestically and $84 million worldwide, it was released day and date in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 during the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. The film was reportedly a pandemic hit for Warner Bros. Discovery, and it ranked as a top featured title on the streamer after it debuted.

Mortal Kombat

The first film starred Lewis Tan as a new protagonist created for the film, Cole Young, a descendant of Scorpion, Jessica MacNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Josh Lawson as Kano. Additionally, the film featured an epilogue scene teasing Johnny Cage for a future installment.

Cage has been a recurring member of the Mortal Kombat video game roster since the franchise made its debut in arcades back in 1992. He’s also been in the games since NetherRealm Studios revamped the franchise starting with Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011. He also returned for Mortal Kombat X in 2015 and Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. The character is typically depicted as a suave action-movie star with a martial arts background who joins the fight for Earth against Outworld.

Urban is definitely an interesting choice. The actor has a long and varied list of film and television credits. He portrayed the heroic Eomer in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in the original film trilogy. He also portrayed Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the recent theatrical Star Trek reboot trilogy. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he portrayed Skurge the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok. More recently, he stars as Billy Butcher in the Amazon Prime Video sensation, The Boys, based on the comic created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

The Boys recently wrapped filming for its fourth season last month. Season 4 will see Urban return as Butcher. It will debut on Prime Video at a later date. If he does join the cast, it will be interesting to see how the film turns out.
