Captain America: Brave New World Rumored To Introduce New Mutant To The MCU

Captain America: Brave New World is adapting the comic book superheroine known as “Sabra” to the MCU. Could she be the next mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Sabra is the alter-ego of Ruth Bat-Seraph, a character from the legendary world of Marvel comic books. Largely considered to be the first Israeli superhero to have a lasting impact and legacy, Sabra’s arrival in the MCU has been officially confirmed. Israeli actress Shira Haas will play Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra in the upcoming film, Captain America: Brave New World.

A rumor from the social media “scooper” known only as “MyTimeToShineHello” may shed light on this new version of Sabra, if their report turns out to be accurate. The rumor claims that Sabra will be a mutant in the movie, although the word “mutant” is never used outright. Sabra simply states that she has always had her powers.

New Details On Sabra in Captain America: Brave New World

In the source material, Sabra is a mutant. Her powers include enhanced strength, reflexes, durability and healing. She is enhanced in a rather basic way, not unlike the powers that Captain America (Steve Rogers) acquires from the super-soldier serum. Mutants are an offshoot of Homo sapiens in the Marvel Universe. The official term for most mutants is Homo superior.

Members of the Homo superior race, such as Sabra, carry a special gene, known as the X-gene. The X-gene grants mutants a variety of random abilities. There is no limit on what those superpowers can be, or how powerful the affected may become. The X-gene often lays dormant until puberty or a high-stress event, but this is not true for all mutants.

If Sabra has always had her powers, then she would fall into that outlier category. The rumor from MyTimeToShineHello includes several other details about Captain America: Brave New World.

Sabra will apparently have her association with Israel reduced. Instead of working for The Mossad or the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) as she does in the comics, Ruth will instead operate as a CIA operative. Sabra is a controversial character due to her ties to Israel. There are some who feel her comic book stories paint Palestine in an ugly light.

Given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, Sabra’s inclusion in Captain America: Brave New World generated strong opinions on both sides of the issue. Marvel Studios released an official statement on their decision to include Sabra in the upcoming film.

“While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics, they are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience, and the filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago.”

Whether or not the changes to Sabra’s characterization will please the outspoken opponents of her inclusion remains to be seen. The general audience will likely be more focused on her potential status as a mutant than her ties to Israel, especially if she is a CIA Agent.

Sabra has occasionally displayed the additional ability to give powers to non-mutants/enhanced individuals. The powers that she gives are seemingly random, and she can take that away at a moment’s notice. That bit of her story is a bit hokey, to put it nicely, so don’t expect to witness Sabra dishing out randomized superpowers in Captain America: Brave New World. It’s possible that this ability will be retooled, if it is not cut from the MCU entirely.

If Sabra is a mutant in Captain America: Brave New World, she will join the growing ranks of mutants within the ever-expanding franchise. Other mutants who have appeared in the MCU include Ms. Marvel, Namor, El Aguila, Professor X, and Mr. Immortal.
