Jerry Bruckheimer reveals National Treasure 3 and a National Treasure series are in development.

Bruckheimer opened up in an interview with Collider, that not only is a third installment of the treasure hunting franchise in the works, but a series for Disney+ is in development as well.

“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active…The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

A World of National Treasure Possibilities

The third movie will hopefully feature the cast from the first two National Treasure films, but the series having a new cast opens up a world of possibilities. The question becomes is this tied to the films in any way beyond concept or is it entirely separate? Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) comes from a long line of code breakers and treasure hunters so could this be a new generation of Gates? Could it be a prequel about Ben before the first National Treasure movie?

If not, it’s possible the group of treasure hunters in the series could have read Riley Poole’s book, or have heard a lecture given by Ben Gates. It would be cool to see one of the characters from the movies, especially Gates, appear in at least the pilot of the series to mentor the new team a bit. It would make sense for the Disney+ series to have a bit of tie in to the films to help expand the world of National Treasure.

“The film version is being written now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

What To Expect From the National Treasure TV Series?

With the pilot written and future episodes planned out new questions arise about the series. Will this be episodic with the group of treasure hunters searching for a new treasure every episode? Or is it serialized with a longer treasure hunt drawn out throughout the season? With the concept being the same, there will likely be rivals hunting down the treasure as well.

Jon Turtletaub directed and produced the first two National Treasure films and the third is still in the process of being written. Recently Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Brenner was attached to write the screenplay for National Treasure 3

National Treasure Franchise Recap
