Hawkgirl fans, prepare for disappointment. With the incredible Black Adam panel officially confirming Carter Hall, aka Hawkman, for the upcoming Shazam! spin-off, many fans assumed that a DCEU Hawkgirl announcement was right around the corner. Unfortunately, the day after DC Fandome, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (who plays the title character), broke the hearts of Shiera Hall fans around the world with a single tweet.
Considering how intrinsically tied Hawkman and Hawkgirl are in the source material, one has to wonder what happened in-universe to separate the two. Did she die? Is this incarnation of Hawkman at a point in his life where he has yet to meet his soulmate? How will her absence affect his mental state and characterization in the film?
The Multiple Incarnations of Hawkgirl
In Smallville, Carter Hall (Michael Shanks) became a very intense, jaded, and angry individual after the murder of his wife Shiera at the hands of the supervillain Icicle. When he lost her, he spiraled into a dark hole of depression and cynicism, eventually drifting apart from the rest of his fellow Justice Society Of America teammates.

Over in the Arrowverse, Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) was left alone to fight as a member of the Legends Of Tomorrow after the immortal terrorist Vandal Savage murdered her soulmate (Falk Hentschel) in front of her. It fascinates me that across the three most notable live-action Hawkman and Hawkgirl stories, not a single one has or will regularly feature the two as an united team. What makes it worse is that judging by The Rock’s comments, we would have seen the two united on the silver screen if an earlier version of the script had made the final cut.
While we now know that Hawkgirl will not appear in Black Adam, hope for a DCEU appearance is not lost yet. She could very well appear in a sequel to Black Adam, the potential Justice Society of America spin-off, or even a Hawkman spin-off, should his character prove popular enough to earn such a thing. Even if she is dead as of the events of the first Black Adam film, her power of reincarnation, which isn’t limited by time or space, (multiple versions of Hawkman and Hawkgirl have existed concurrently in the source material) makes a return from the grave a very real possibility.
Someday, Dwayne Johnson will make good on his word and explain to us all why Hawkgirl didn’t make the cut for this film. Until then, all we can do is speculate and hope that Sheira Hall gets her time to shine in the DCEU somewhere down the road.
