Paramount Pictures releases the first teaser trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins in conjunction with the MTV Movie and TV Awards.

Major franchises are getting the big-screen treatment every week in Hollywood and if you were a kid in the 1980s, there wasn’t a franchise much bigger than G.I. Joe. The hit cartoon, comic, and toy line, all helped to inspire Paramount’s ill-fated 2009 release, G.I. Joe and the marginally improved sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013.

After not even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could sufficiently revive the floundering cinematic franchise Paramount went back to the drawing board. They began developing scripts for numerous approaches to the franchise and the first new film out of the gates is Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The film focuses on the titular character who is one of the most famous Joes of all time.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Snake Eyes will be played by Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), who is following Ray Park (Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) who portrayed the character in the previous two installments. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is an origin story for the future global commando and promises to explore his rivalry with Storm Shadow in new, grounded ways. Take a look at the teaser for the upcoming blockbuster:

This first look is brief, yet gives fans reason for optimism as the new teaser does effectively set the tone for the rebooted series. Henry Golding looks like he is a great fit for the role, both in and out of the costume. Long time fans of the G.I. Joe mythos know that while Snake Eyes is a world-class ninja and has the potential to be an action icon. However, one of his defining characteristics is that he becomes mute after a tragedy on the battlefield. It will be interesting to see if this is depicted in this film, or if they are saving it for a future installment in order to fully utilize Golding’s acting talent.

However, this new teaser signals that the promotional campaign is in full swing for the upcoming action film, so it will be interesting to see the rollout of familiar and fan-favorite characters over the coming months.
