Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is already shaping up to be a huge film. We here at The Illuminerdi revealed that the main villain of the sequel is none other than Shuma-Gorath himself and he’s after America Chavez because he wants her power in order to control the multiverse. Shuma-Gorath is a major multiverse threat that Doctor Strange will need to deal with, but it may not be the only threat the Sorcerer Supreme will need to face. It is not only known that Mordo will return, but the Scarlet Witch herself, Wanda Maximoff.
With the events of WandaVision and notably “The Series Finale”, Wanda Maximoff is poised to be a threat that Doctor Strange may need to face.
In the WandaVision finale, Wanda faced off against Agatha Harkness who was trying to steal her powers and was in possession of the Darkhold. Agatha revealed to Wanda that the Darkhold is not only the “book of the damned”, but has an entire chapter about the Scarlet Witch.
“The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged. She has no coven, no need for incantation. Your power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It’s your destiny to destroy the world.”
And when Agatha is defeated, she seemed truly distressed about the fact that Wanda Maximoff has accepted her destiny as the Scarlet Witch and all of the power that comes with it She warns Wanda that she doesn’t understand what she’s unleashed. And the last we saw of Wanda, in the post credit scene, she was astral projecting herself to study the Darkhold when she heard her son’s voices, Tommy and Billy, begging for her help.
With the Darkhold Wanda Maximoff could be learning more about who she is and what she is capable of as the Scarlet Witch. It seems she has already quickly picked up astral projecting and has somehow channeled Tommy and Billy.
WHAT ROLE WANDA MAXIMOFF COULD PLAY IN DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS
Now the question becomes, what role will Wanda Maximoff play in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness? Given the fact that Wanda has accepted that she is the Scarlet Witch and all that comes with that, along with her study of the Darkhold, it doesn’t seem likely that she will be in the best place. With massive powers rivaling that of the Sorcerer Supreme, the Book of the Damned, and more trauma and grief due to the loss of her family, Wanda is poised to potentially be a formidable antagonist in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness.

With Agatha’s warning of the Scarlet Witch being destined to destroy the world and her search for her sons, it’s possible that Wanda Maximoff is the catalyst that brings Shuma-Gorath into play. With Wanda hearing her twin boys begging for her help while reading the Darkhold and the fact that the Doctor Strange sequel is, obviously, dealing with the multiverse Wanda could potentially be searching the multiverse for Billy and Tommy. Now, if the Scarlet Witch is scouring the multiverse for her children this could have two major consequences, the thinning of the barriers between universes and it could draw the attention of Shuma-Gorath.
With Shuma-Gorath looking to conquer the multiverse the Scarlet Witch is an ideal magic user to have on his side. Shuma-Gorath, in a similar vein as Dormammu in Doctor Strange, could promise Wanda that he could help her save her children if she helps him. This manipulation would be an interesting way to have Wanda Maximoff as a sympathetic villain in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, while still acting against the titular hero. After all of the loss she has suffered including Vision and their children, it would be understandable that she’d be willing to do whatever it takes to save her children.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness could also potentially combine some elements of the demon Chthon with Shuma-Gorath. Specifically, Chthon’s connection to the Darkhold and/or possessing the Scarlet Witch. The Scarlet Witch bringing the massive threat of Shuma-Gorath to Earth would be the perfect way to fulfill the prophecy that Agatha set up at the end of WandaVision and follow through on her hinted descent into darkness with the use of the Darkhold.
Wanda Maximoff has suffered numerous tragedies and traumas throughout her life and WandaVision was no different. Living a seemingly happy life with Vision and having children with him was a glimmer of happiness. But after losing her children and Vision, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Wanda lose her way and team up with a powerful being like Shuma-Gorath as a means to an end. Many fans were expecting Wanda Maximoff to completely lose it during WandaVision given the series influence by the House of M comics, and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is the perfect opportunity to potentially explore that fallout.
If Wanda Maximoff does bring Shuma-Gorath and the potential destruction of not only the world, but the multiverse, the consequences of that will be very interesting. Will Wanda get her twin boys back? What will happen between Mordo and the Scarlet Witch? Will we see Agatha return given her knowledge of the Scarlet Witch and the Darkhold?

If Wanda is an antagonist during the film, will she find her way and help Strange in the end? As Agatha said, heroes don’t torture people and that must apply to destroying the world too. With so many questions about how Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness plays out, the upcoming sequel is set up to be a fantastic film full of madness, magic, and chaos.
What do you think Wanda Maximoff’s role will be in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness? Do you think Shuma-Gorath is how the Scarlet Witch will destroy the world as Agatha warned? Do you think Wanda Maximoff will simply be assisting Doctor Strange and America Chavez? Leave your thoughts in the comments below or on our social media.
