Netflix has a number of live-action adaptations for beloved anime and animated properties in different stages of production. Cowboy Bebop is set to hit the streaming platform November 19, 2021, the main cast of the live-action One Piece was recently announced, and Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to add to their own cast.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has already cast Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Daniel Dae Kim also recently joined the cast as Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko’s father. Daniel Dae Kim is no stranger to the franchise having voiced Hiroshi Sato in The Legend of Korra and General Fong in an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, reprising Fong in the 2007 video game.
Now he will be bringing the major antagonist in Avatar: The Last Airbender to life, but how this character will come into play during the first season is still a mystery especially given the fact that Fire Lord Ozai was not seen, other than as a silhouette or in flashbacks, until the third season of the original animated series.
We here at The Illuminerdi have revealed details about the characters Netflix is casting including a number that have yet to be cast. Based on the descriptions we believe these characters include Zuko’s Uncle Iroh, Zuko’s sister Azula, Aang’s once mentor Gyatso, and the Fire Nation Navy officer Zhao.
LIVE-ACTION AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER NEW WORKING TITLE
We have recently learned from our sources that Avatar: The Last Airbender has a new working title, “Blue Dawn.” What this new working title means is a mystery, but it is an interesting change from the previously reported working title “Trade Winds.”
It is no surprise that Netflix is hoping to build on the already existing audience of Avatar: The Last Airbender. When the animated series was added to the streaming giant in May 2020 it shot to the top of the list, becoming the #1 series in only four days and holding the position in Netflix’s top 10 series list for 60 days. With this it became the most streamed children’s series on Netflix in 2020.
The beloved animated series first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005 and lasted for three seasons. But since then it has grown into a massive franchise spanning two animated series, tie in novels, comic books, and video games, with even more to come. Netflix will be adding to the legacy with the live-action reimagining of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but fans will also be able to experience new animated content as well.
After the original creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender left the live-action reimagining due to creative difference it was announced that Nickelodeon was launching Avatar Studios. Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original animated series executive producers and creators will serve as co-chief creative officers of Avatar Studios. The studio will bring new animated series and animated films to fans with the first project announced being an animated theatrical film.

Albert Kim will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender reimagining. Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi will serve as executive producer with Roseanna Liang serving as co-executive producer. Goi, Liang, Jabbar Raisani, and Jet Wilkinson will serve as directors on the live action reimagining.
