John Krasinski sets a stacked cast for his next directorial effort, IF.
It’s a reunion of sorts for The Office, as Steve Carell is set to join John Krasinski in IF. Ryan Reynolds was already attached to star, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (best known for the acclaimed series Fleabag) also joined the cast.

In addition to those powerful cast members, IF has also added Academy Award winner Louis Gosset Jr. (Watchmen), Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter), Caley Fleming (Loki) and Minari‘s young breakout star Alan Kim. That means The Office is not the only reunion in town, since Waller-Bridge and Shaw also worked together on Fleabag.
IF Only We Knew…
There are not many details available about the film’s plot, as Paramount keeps those under wraps. But according to Deadline, the story is based on Krasinski’s own idea about a child rediscovering their imagination.
Krasinski will write, direct, produce and star in the film. Ryan Reynolds will produce the film through his production company Maximum Efforts as well. George Dewey, a frequent producer of Reynold’s films, will executive produce. They have worked on many projects together, including: Free Guy, Netflix’s upcoming time travel adventure The Adam Project (starring Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana and Julia Garner), and Apple TV+’s upcoming Christmas musical Spirited (starring Reynolds and Will Ferrell).
John Krasinski and his partners Allyson Seger and Andrew Form have a production company called Sunday Night, which recently signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures just like Reynold’s Maximum Efforts did. According to Deadline, IF is a film that both studio and stars have been pumped about for a while.
Krasinski’s career as a director took off with his two A Quiet Place films, which he also wrote, produced and starred in. Those two horror films were box-office hits and got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Krasinski will produce a spin-off of the horror franchise, which will be directed by Pig‘s Michael Sarnoski. It will scare audiences in theatres September 22, 2023. After his feature film directorial debut Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, he directed three episodes of the hit show The Office, the show in which him and Carell worked together for the first time.
With a stacked cast like this and Krasinski behind the camera, I’m sure that IF is a film worth being excited for. I certainly am. But in the everchanging cinema landscape, due to the pandemic, the ongoing streaming war and the success that movies like the Ryan Reynolds vehicle Red Notice brought for Netflix, I wonder if a non-event movie like IF might become a Paramount+ original.
IF is set to hit theatres on November 17, 2023.
