She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the latest entry to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s looking to bring a new form of comedy with it.

The half-hour legal comedy focuses on Jennifer Walters, played by Tatiana Maslany, a lawyer who receives Hulk powers after receiving a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner.

In comic books, She-Hulk is known for including comedic elements into its story, primarily through breaking the fourth wall. The character has been doing it since her creation in 1980, and the upcoming Disney+ series has promised to not only include its fair share of wall breaks but also to balance the show’s comedic style with other various elements.

The Illuminerdi had the opportunity to attend the She-Hulk press conference, where director and executive producer Kat Coiro revealed how they balanced the comedy with the MCU style.

During the press conference, Coiro stated that the She-Hulk team pulled a bunch of elements from different genres of film and TV for the upcoming series. While the series is, first and foremost, a legal comedy, it also includes drama, action, and suspense, keeping with the MCU style but giving each episode a distinct feel.

Balancing the comedy that is a significant part of the character’s source material, while juggling all the different genres and elements related to the MCU was of the utmost importance for the She-Hulk team. Coiro had this to say about finding that perfect balance:

“You know we were always looking for that balance between really honoring the comedy that was on the page and that the actors were bringing on the day, but also making something that fits into the MCU visually and feels cinematic. And so it was just always, you know, going back and forth between those two things and finding ways to slot them both in.”

One element every MCU project has is action, and while She-Hulk will have its fair share of comedy, balancing it with the traditional Marvel action proved to be a lot more complex than expected. Coiro, director of episodes one through four, eight, and nine, revealed that finding that balance was the biggest challenge on set.

Check out her statement below.

“You know, it was one of the biggest challenges of the series, absolutely. Because action and CGI take a lot of rigid preparedness, and a comedy is the opposite, where you want looseness, and you want, you know, you want to play a little.

So you know, one example I can think of is where we would rehearse in advance so that then we could come in and set up all the technical things like the platforms, for example, that a Hulk must walk on so that we could come in and have some semblance of looseness. But it definitely, I would say, was the biggest challenge of the show was balancing all the technical aspects, all the action, all the stunts with comedy which traditionally is, you know, just people in a room talking with cameras pointed at them.”

Coiro and the rest of the She-Hulk cast and crew aren’t newcomers to filming comedies and action; many of them have been on sets designated for one or the other. However, combining the two for the Disney+ series would prove challenging for even the most experienced filmmakers. While finding that balance was daunting, She-Hulk seems to be in more than capable hands.
